Recent Disease outbreak

I have been palnning a trip to New York early next year but the recent out break of mosquito carried disease has made me have second thoughts. Is the situation under control? or should I plan a trip elesewhere? Ive heard between 3 and 5 people have died and over 60 people are believed to have contracted the disease. Is it just a case of media sensationalism or should I be taking what Ive heard on the News in to account. Thanks in advance for your advice.

The city has been spraying Malthion to kill the mosquitos and says that they will continue to do so until the first frost.

You said you were planning to come early next year. By January, it is almost definite that there will not be any more mosquitoes around and by then the insecticide will most certainly have dissipated.

Interesting that you seem to be in the U.K. I have heard that the papers there are notorious for sensationalzing and a talk-show host here in NY just read some of your newspaper accounts of the mosquito problem here and they sounded quite exaggerated.

"Ive heard between 3 and 5 people have died and over 60 people are believed to have contracted the disease"

That is out of a population of 7-8 million people. Of course, you should always be cautious but realize what the numbers mean in perspective.

First of all, there are not 60 definite cases, but 60 "possible" cases, and many, if not most them, may test negatively. Previous posters have put the situation is the proper perspective.
Second, your chances of getting a mosquito bite in New York in January are pretty slim. Pardon the sarcasm, but you have a better chance of being abducted by aliens.
By all mean, come to New York!

I recently was attacked by sand fleas in florida. I don't have a history of attracting mosquitoes. Ever since, mosquitoes SEEM to be horribly attracted to me. I even stopped wearing perfume.

What are my chances of being bit by a mosquito in late october OR early November then please?
