Ramada on Canal
Help! I'm booked at the Ramada on Canal Feb-4 through 8 and just read that it's on a highway and in a bad neighborhood! Is this true? Any suggestions? Will have to eat at least the first night's fee if change now, but that's only $69. Don't want to spend more than $100 if can help it!

Don't, I say don't go there. Canal Street is not safe after dark, if you get a block or two out of the French quarter. We used to come out of the Opera (on Canal) and need to be escorted by police on horseback to our cars. I am not sure it has improved in N.O since then. Stay away from Rampart street, Desire street, and most every other street, outside of the Quarter district after dark, especiall alone.

New Orleans' crime rate has plummeted since 1994, when it was one of the nation's highest. Not even in the top 20 now! That having been said, the Ramada is still a terrible hotel in a terrible locale.
I had to giggle about the previous post saying don't go near Desire Street....that's MILES away from where any tourist would be anyway!

Thank you, Jim. I was wondering how Desire came into play in this thread. I live in the Quarter - near the "Desire projects" this woman mentioned in another post. I thought the Desire and Florida projects were in Gentilly. I know there are projects on Basin Street and on Orleans, but I thought these were called the Treme projects. Perhaps I am wrong, but I am not a native and don't claim to know everything about area. I do know though that we are no longer the "murder capital of the world" and crime is way down. I feel comfortable walking my 8 pound dog alone at night - not at 11 or midnight, but I do walk her after dinner by myself and feel perfectly comfortable doing that. My husband and I frequently walk down Rampart to Canal Street to attend theatre events and concerts at the Saenger and have never had to be escorted by mounties - nor have we ever had any type of safety problem since we moved into the Quarter.
