I'm wondering if this is possible. A fine, very quiet room (both from outside noise and from other rooms). Can spend around $300 per night. I know that much depends on one's neighbors, but also know that some hotels have thin walls and noisy plumbing, others good soundproofing between rooms (and on windows) and gentler plumbing. Would greatly appreciate help on finding appropriate accommodation for us.

They do have internet rates for the Mandarin Oriental. My wife and I were able to get our 4th night free for our trip in July. Its has very quiet rooms and top notch serice/views. Just as an added note, you never want to be in a room that has a door going into a adjoining bedroom. Those rooms tend to be more noisier.

I stay quite often at the JW Marriott in SF. It is a little bit of a business hotel but has recently been remodeled. Very nice rooms and bathrooms. I have never heard noise from other rooms and no problem with plumbing sounds.

The JW Marriott is my favorite hotel in San Francisco. It is a Portman designed hotel. The rooms are large, with marble bathrooms to die for. A large soaking tub, separate from the shower. Even a tiny TV to keep you distracted from your shaving or makeup.

The lobby sports glass elevators and a fountain with larger than life sculptures of ladies dancing, ala the Monet painting.

My favorite hotel in SF is the Hotel Monaco and it has always been quiet for me.

I haven't stayed at Hotel Monaco but it has a terrific bistro style restaurant on the ground floor, the Grand Cafe.

We found the Villa Florence very quiet. I slept soundly, although I usually don't, and the hotel seemed pretty booked, too, judging from turnout at the afternoon wine reception.

In my experience, it's in large part luck of the draw. Inconsiderate fellow-guests are the worst.

The Villa Florence, if you have a room overlooking Powell St., is very noisy actually. The same is true with their rooms overlooking O'Farrell. Just mentioning so if one does book at the Villa Florence and they need to have a quiet room stress that to the reservation clerk.

Two Christmases ago, we spent a week in a two bedroom, three bath suite at the Hotel Palomar. They designed their windows and walls so you don't hear a thing. We really enjoyed the service, small atmosphere and location of the hotel. Check Kimpton's site for rates. They usually have specials.
