Quick Weekend Trip to Maine. Where to Go?

Hello,

My wife and I were hoping to run up to Maine this weekend for a quick trip but we are complete novices when it comes to the area. Does anyone have suggestions on where to stay/fly in to and what to see for a brief first trip? We will likely rent a car but I know there are a lot of places to see so if you can narrow down some key spots that would be a huge help.

Thanks!

Do you have an airline preference? Best big cities to visit are Bangor and Portland.

Most likely looking at flying US Air into Bangor and then renting a car. Would it be possible to see Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor in a weekend?

We will either leave late tonight or early tomorrow morning and then stay until Monday morning.

You can definitely do that if you fly to Bangor. I believe you are about an hour away. Bar Harbor is a bit touristy by Acadia is worth it. Make sure you visit some of the quieter parts like Southwest Harbor. There are schooners tours (we did the sunset cruise on the Margaret Todd - the one with red sails), whale watching, sunrise ontop of Cadillac Mountain, popovers at the Jordan Pond House. Just typing this makes me want to go.

oh my gawd. Just reading about the popovers at Jordan Pond House makes me salivate!

Anyway, for the OP, fly into Bangor and rent a car. It's about a 1-hr drive into Acadia/Bar Harbor. Have a good time!

This is wahoo's wife I think we've decided to fly into Bangor tonight and drive to Bar Harbor, leaving Monday morning. I've found availability at the Bayview, Bluenose Inn, and Eden Village. Any recommendations for these or other places to stay? Thanks so much!

The Bayview has a gorgeous setting, with a terrific reputation. I am fond of Bar Harbour and don't find it overwhelmingly touristy, esp in the evenings. Have a wander downtown and enjoy the lobster ice cream at Bill and Bens!
