Questions about carless in Philadelphia
Four of us will be in Philadephia on Sat. Dec 29. We are planning to take the train from Newark. We have reservations at the Barnes Foundation and at the Renoir exhibit. Is it going to be a problem getting cabs from the train station to the Barnes and then from the Barnes to the Museum of Art? How long does the (non-docent) tour of the Barnes take? Also any recommendations for a place to have lunch between the two visits?

Do you want to take a cab from a Philly train station to the Barnes? I would take the train from any of the three train stations in the city out to Merion and then walk or cab it from there. There are directions on the Barnes web site and I am sure they can give you a cab phone number. You can then take the train back to Suburban station and then walk (long but certainly doable) or cab it to the art museum.

As Birdie recommends, it is easy to take the Septa rail, R-5, from Philly to Merion.

A taxi would be more convenient but more expensive, I suspect. A taxi would be reasonable from Barnes to the Museum, if you really don't like walking.
You could have lunch at the Museum, which I heard was good.

I think that you will be able to get taxis to link together the whole day. Split the cost among four people and it shouldn't be too great.
I'm sure its different for everyone who goes but a rule of thumb would be about two hours in each museum. The Barnes can take longer but that should be reasonable.
There is a cafe in the lower level of the Museum of Art. You carry your own tray but the selections are OK. Everything from pizza to salads to sandwiches and more. Using that for your lunch break would afford you some flexibility of schedule. Alternately, the Zagat guides will detail many options.
Have a great day in Philadelphia.

"the Barnes" is wonderful.
You leave on "overload".
some of his collection has never been anywhere else..
Plus his life history is unique.
Advice by other posters about transport is "right on"
I went with an Elderhostel group-so all; was arranged.
You will love it....
