Two frost my butt.

11. Posting a question, getting answers, not liking our replies then telling us we were rude.

The two examples that come to mind were the "Flying with my infant" not wanting to purchase a seat. Thinking we were suggesting the poster was a bad mother for not buying a seat.

The other was the "I'm living at home with my parents and my mom doesn't approve of us traveling together" post. I was honestly asking why she still lived at home (school? medical reason?) and got called rude for asking. I was honestly curious and this brings me to my next point....

12. Reading more into replies than are there. I've been called rude and have seen others called rude just because a reply is taken out of context.

I have seen rude posts but for the most part, a lot of posts are read out of context.

The more things change the more they stay the same Witness this four old instructional thread about how to post on Fodor's:

Our Pompous Ass Club is comprised of a select group of individuals who frequent this forum. Induction occurs when someone on this forum refers to one of your elite posts and calls you a Pompous Ass. Forthwith are some guidelines to help you earn a place among the Asses:

1. Never ever post a travel question or response if you can possibly help it. Spend your time on posts like this one, or better yet, posts which use limericks, rhymes or parodies to put down everyone and everything you've ever read here. Find someone else's topic and start making fun of it.

2. If someone has the unmitigated gall to post a travel question about something YOU have already answered, for God's sake, waste no time in advising that poster to do a SEARCH on the topic before he bothers you again! You, after all, have to have time to compose witty insults.

3. If you ARE forced to answer a travel question (because you know no one else out there can do it), be sure to complain first, then take a swipe at something like the poster's map reading skills or white tennis shoes. Let him/her know that he/she is a traveling idiot. Tell them they have not provided enough information for you to answer their question and lecture them about it. Create a separate post which complains about this. Throw in a complaint about people who ask what to do and see, just for good measure.

4. When posting, be sure to use big, complicated words that will have all those ingoramuses (or is it ignorami?) out there running for their dictionaries. Make sure they know that YOU went to university.

5. Refer posters to other resources rather than give any helpful first hand information. Hey, you had to research it all yourself, so should they! Don't let 'em get lazy.

6. Finally, be sure to poke fun at their measly incomes and budget hotel choices. Tell them all about your month at the Paris Ritz when they ask about student hostels. Cheap restaurants, they ask? If they can't afford the trip then why are they going? Make sure they know that YOU have plenty of disposable income and are not afraid to use it.

This is merely a sample of the many ways in which you too can become a Pompous Ass. We have monthly meetings and a secret handshake, but you'll find out about those later.

New people are new, and most probably won't phrase their Subject very well because they just don't know any better.

They likely have no idea that they can "search", or even browse, as opposed to being just to lazy to do so.

And, they are entirely unlikely to read subjects such as this one in their endeavor to acquire assistance with their travel plans.

My personal huge peeve is with those who DO phrase their inquiry perfectly, and, after 24 responses, say "Keep it coming". The ones who want DETAILS and are are fussy beyond belief with regard to lodging, transportation, restaurants, itinerary, etc. Getting everyone here to provide their research for them. THEN, they do not return with a report of their trip OR contribute their experiences for others inquiring about the same destination. And, don't report back on lodging, restaurants, etc. THEN, they register an entirely new "name" for their next trip.

All in all, everyone who participates here can choose to read or not, respond or not.

There's a difference between being helpful whenever/wherever you can and whining and complaining about the quality of inquiries.

If you don't approve of the inquiry, you can just ignore it. Before or after you read it.

Admonishing folks is an utterly useless endeavor - in my observation over the many years I've participated here.

Excuse me djkbooks, but I seem to remember a very unpleasant and personally insulting reply you made to one of my posts.

I am glad that after all these years of posting you now realize that if you see a post that you dislike, you can ignore it rather than attack the poster....

A subset set of the "keep it coming" type -- the ones who get lots and lots of great, detailed, helpful suggestions and then finally write to say, "we've decided to do something else" or "we're going to do what we wanted to do in the first place."

Arghhh.

You got me to click on it so now that I am here....

Try to have fun, after all we are here because we enjoy travel right? In the words of one of my favorite quotes from the movie Stripes "Lighten up Francis!"

I admit that I sometimes try to be witty (see my posting on ladies shoes and packing). I mean no harm and believe that most others don't either. By the way, thanks shoe and packing ladies for just not shooing ;-) me away!
