Question about a trip to COLD SPRING, NY for July 4th!!

Hi there,

My husband and I would like to visit COLD SPRING, NY during the July 4th weekend. (We live in Manhattan.)

Were wondering what there is to do there. Are there any nature trails for hiking, or is it mainly a nice town with views of the Hudson River?

Also, are there public fireworks on July 4th?

Thanks for all your suggestions!

I spent a day in Cold Spring a few years ago.

After riding Metro North, we walked to a trailhead and enjoyed a great 5 hour hike in the hills above Cold Spring. Amazing views. Afterwards, we walked back into town, stopped at a local watering hole for a beer, and then had dinner at a decent restaurant very close to the train station. We returned to Manhattan in the evening.

From what I recall, Cold Spring's primary attraction was the hiking. We did see a nice looking hotel, and I picked up a brochure, but it wasn't air-conditioned and I can't handle that in the summer.

I'd return for the hiking, but I'm not sure it's someplace I'd stay overnight or for a weekend.

Good luck!

The Main Street of Cold Springs is ALL Antique Stores and a couple of small restaurants. The one that is where the train station used to be seems to be the most popular.
We used to go in the fall when the trees were very colorful, and it was sort of chilly, usually the big church on the corner will have a flea market which is fun to go through.
We never went in summer but try googling Cold Springs and see if they have fireworks planned, they might.
Have fun..

Are you driving or taking a train? It might be worthwhile to rent a car for a day. It's a beautiful drive to the area, wqhich is great for hiking or just plain strolling on a sunny day.
For restaurants, I strongly endorse Cathryn's Dolcigno Tuscan Grill on Main Street in Cold Spring. If it's not too hot, opt for outdoor dining there.

The hiking is quite good in the area. Here is a site which tells you some nearby trails: http://www.hudsonvalleyoutfitters.com/guided_hikes.htm

Boscobel is open. They are showing Tempest now. You may want to tour the grounds and see the show.

You are not far from West Point and there is usually a concert there during July 4th weekend.

I believe that Bear Mountain State Park has fireworks on Friday, July 1.

Have a good time.

LOL, betty,"Scarlett: A big hug to you...you're everywhere!"
Hugs back to you and I am sure there are some who think I am everywhere and wish I weren't
We lived in Manhattan for many years and loved exploring, Cold Springs is a perfect day out of the city.
I liked going when the trees were colorful, my husband says there is nothing to do, LOL
I second Boscobel also ~

Hi Scarlett,

Sometimes having "nothing to do" is a good thing!

Cheers from NYC...
