My wife and I (along with our 2 yr old) are driving up to spend a few days (3 days/4 nights/1 morning) between Quebec and Montreal on a vacation that starts in Boston and Acadia. I have read a number of strings on Boston and Acadia so far. Any thoughts on balancing our time in Montreal and Quebec (there in the 1st week of August)? We love hiking and the outdoors (but plan on getting a lot of that in Acadia). We enjoy local breweries, fun (not too fancy - toddler along) restaurants, history and avoiding the tour busses. Any thoughts or advice on must-sees, restaurants or places to stay would be helpful.

Have you looked at the mileage involved?We came back from Quebec City via Fort Kent once. It was probably not the most direct route but certainly went thru some remote country in northern Maine. If you aren't dead set on visiting Montreal and Quebec City, I think you would enjoy less driving and spending more time in Maine, perhaps stopping in Portsmouth NH on your way between Boston and Acadia. Portsmouth has a wonderful children's museum, outdoor summer theater/music events, nearby wonderful sand beaches in Rye and Hampton, great downtown restaurants that include a brew pub. You could also make a side trip to Lee NH to visit the Flagg Hill Winery and Distillery. In addition to wine they make Gen John Stark vodka. Otherwise, you might head from Acadia to Montreal via NH White Mtns stopping at touristy but fun Storyland in Glen NH (just north of North Conway), head to Littleton for homemade ice cream and a visit to the longest penny candy counter and then over to Danville VT for the Great Vermont Corn Maze (very challenging, you'll want to put your toddler in a backpack and expect to spend more than an hour in the maze).If you mean you have one week for Boston, Acadia and Montreal and Quebec City, that's not enough time. If it's a week in addition to Maine, then you do have time but there will be a lot of driving involved.

I appreciate the concern about the drive times but actually they don't bother us. After looking into it, the longest amount of driving we will do in one day will be 5 hours - which, for us, isn't a big deal. By the way - I meant we had a week+ after leaving Boston. We will look into including some of the sites you mention - but we do have ourselves set on the Montreal/Quebec City thing.
