Hey I did that post and expected to get slammed while doing it because it was the European board. HURRAH FOR JOHN! I forget what name I posted under. In any event remember John, Condo rentals are also a great way to save while you are there. I know a great one on the North Shore of kauai that I stayed at last summer http://www.hanaleihouse-kauai.com/information.html. Let me know if want more details there are other agencies that were also helpful. Actually winter is an iffy time on the North Shore. Oh well where ever you go have fun.

This was first posted January 3rd and the sale only ran a week. Sorry but you missed the boat this time.

It's not a joke. It's just a promotion that is currently OVER! The airlines were selling fares from the midwest and east coast to Maui and Oahu for $300-350, but now the sale is over, and the prices have bounced back up to their old rate, or even higher. Looks like several people got in on the deal, but the rest of us will have to simply wait for another sale!

just keep watching checking discount houses like cheap tickets as well as airlines that provide hub service to Hawaii. Seems like the switch back and forth between giving the discount houses deals and then making themselves the deal givers. Last year I hit a $700 sale to Hawaii direct from Newark it was only on for a week and other tickets were $1000+ after this sale in March for August. This was through continental, this year I just got an online flight to another destination that was cheaper through cheap tickets than through continental directly so it can be a bit of a see saw in terms of who is holding the deal.

I know $700 is not $350 but a deal is deal when you have to be in Hawaii.

$ 700 is a deal in August? I don't think so. $ 1000 is just plain ridiculous, but $ 700 is still no bargain by a long shot!

When prices never dipped below $1000 yes 700 is a deal from the east coast. This year prices will fall lower but last summer in that economy you could not do better unless you bid and actually I did bid and was not getting bids slightly under this price accepted. They suggest I ask for this price and was prepared to until up popped this one week sale. The sale came in March and then never appeared again my flight was in August. I like to continue to watch to see if there are any trends in the fare hikes.Summer before I bid for a bit under $500 same airline, every year is different if you watch.

Based on the periodic checking I've done over the last year-and-a-half or so, Approx. 650-1200 is the usual fare for Continental's (CO) non-stop from Newark (EWR) to Honolulu (HNL), depending on the day of week, dates and advance notice.
This is the only non-stop to HNL from the NY area , other than some charters that may be available.

I got the non-stop on the CO website, for $308 and change, including taxes, on Jan. 3rd. This was a promotional fare and therefore could not be uprgraded w/ FF miles. By Jan. 8th the fare for the exact same dates I chose was double that.

Be aware that most of the really low fares include stops and/or plane-changes and layovers, which can be major inconvenience. If you're healthy, strong and resilient, then you may want to save money this way but otherwise, it can cause you to need a vacation after your vacation!

Another thing: Re: going to other islands besides Oahu:

When I bought the above-mentioned fare to HNL, the lowest-priced fare on CO from NY area to Kauai was around $700- !, yet I could fly to Kauai from HNL for $150- r.t. or less.

I think it often works out to be much cheaper to do it separately this way when going to other islands: Get the lowest fare possible to HNL , then fly interisland.

On the other hand, if I only wanted to go to one of the other islands and could go directly from the NY area to one of the W. Coast airports without any stops on the way and then go directly to Kauai, Maui or the Big Island, without too long a layover, that would probably be ideal.

yes sammy but United has a sweet flight directly to Kauai you connect in LA/sfo. My dream trip is leaving work on a Friday, going to fly to LA/sfo(they change which airport does the am flight) sleep over then hop on that morning flight be in Kauai by 12 instead of 6. I know that continental has a flight that gets you there by 12 have done it but you are not feeling like it is 12pm after the ride.

This flight from United never dipped below 800 and was at $1000 plus by the time I left. I only go in August so I am stuck with higher fares.

also sammy you want to call cheap tickets (started in Hawaii but was sold last year) and ask about interisland coupons use to be $120 round trip. If you don't get a deal search around call island based travel agencies like Robert's Hawaii or Pleasant Island Holiday's. Go online blah blah blah
