When I lived in DC, I used the prayer technique and an old car. Washington Circle was particularly intimidating at first. I kept the engine in ok shape, but the fenders looked like they had been used at Gettysburg for target practice.
As my boss said, just barrel your way through. Except he had a few more nouns, expletives, and adjectives to go along with barrel.

When I first moved to the DC area, I hated traffic circles. But now, I kind of like them. They are nice to look at, they deter speeding, they funnel traffic reasonably well, and you're less likely to have a very bad accident in one. Besides, no one has figured out how to put a strip mall adjacent to one.
My husband still flinches when I navigate one though, because the best strategy seems to be just show no fear.
