Private condo at Hanalei Bay Resort?
Has anyone stayed in a privately owned condo at Hanalei Bay Resort? I'm thinking of renting this condo, the canopy bed looks nice: http://www.oceanfrontrealty.com/73078.htm.

The unit looks pretty good, but I have read some uneven comments about HBR. I can heartily recommend the place we rented a year ago:

You will have at least as good a view at about half the weekly cost. In addition, this is a free standing house, clean as a whistle and beautifully furnished, that offers more privacy than a condo. Both the upper and lower floors have a lanai and overlook the mountains and a golf course. The front of the house faces the scenic ocean overlook. I know I sound like an advertisement, but I have seldom loved a place as much as this. We'd buy it if we could. Happy hunting!

Sunkist, We stayed in a private three bedroom condo at HBR and while our unit didn't look quite as nice as the one you are interested in, we loved it. We had a huge lanai overlooking Bali Hai. There was a rainbow on our front lawn every morning. The grounds are beautiful and the pool shown in the link you provided is not the grotto pool with the hot tub and water fall. The restaurant is very nice there and its a convenient walk to the beach and the Princeville hotel. It depends whether you want to stay in a resort atmosphere or a private home.

HBR will offer all the amenities of a hotel (which is what it was, originally) -- plus that fabulous view, and beach access.
The Kaua`i Villas are nice also, but without the restaurant, shops, bar, pool, and beach access. Nice view, for sure!

Agree condo looks fine, having stayed at HBR and surrounding condos in Pville resort, the HBR concierge desk was happy to help us with any matters while staying in a private non-HBR condo (at Alii Kai), and other than use of the pool/jacuzzi or tennis courts at HBR, I think they will be happy if you use HBR amenities like the Bali Hai restaurant or Happy Talk lounge.
Not sure how the beach access is directly from the villa (Maggi referred to above)and you would not be eligible for a comlimentary HBR golf cart ride to and from the beach, but nonetheless, we were able to walk to and utilize the same beach without staying at HBR or P'ville Hotel.

I agree that if you want "hotel" amenities than it certainly worth the extra money. Our preference is not to stay in a hotel or resort, at least in Hawaii. To answer John's question, the stairway to Hideaway's beach was a five minute walk for us, and we used the Princeville Hotel beach as well as all the other beaches on the north shore. They allow you to use the elevators to go down to the beach. The only thing they don't allow is for non-guests to use the pool. The pool bartender makes KILLER mai-tais. (Note to self: don't go snorkeling after two mai-tais.)
