Prices high for Vegas flight, why?

I am trying to solidify a short trip to Vegas. We already have accomodations, just need the flight from Kansas City.

Anybody have any tips on how to get the cheapest airfare? Right now, the cheapest airfare for the dates I want in March are completely outrageous, over $300 per person. To me, that's completely out of the realm.

I know about Priceline and the other Web sites, but do any of you know any tricks, i.e. times to check on the Web, sites to check out, etc?

On a budget, I want to get the cheapest available deal without us having to flap our arms to make the plane go. Plus, we have to save some of our money for the Hawaii trip.

Thanks

March is one of the popular months to go to LV (weather, conventions and some early spring breaks this year). No specific tips, though I like hotwire lately.

Does Southwest fly from KC to Las Vegas?

You could see if different days would be cheaper.

Change your days of travel. I would bet that you are planning to return on a Sunday. Try returning on Monday.

Don't be picky about flight times.

The problem is, I really can't vary the days too much. The days we have at the hotel are Mon-Thurs and the flight out is Wednesday, returning on a Friday. I've tried to fly out on a monday and return on a Wednesday and the price isn't much different.

Perhaps I could wait for a last-minute deal? Do they have last-minute deals on any Web sites just for flights?

I wouldn't expect that there is going to be a last-minute deal, especially out of KC.

I'm a bit confused, so maybe you could clarify a bit. How many nights are you going out there? You mentioned Mon-Thurs for the hotel, but then said you checked airfare for Mon-Wed and Wed-Fri. So either you're going for 2 nights (somewhere between Mon and Thursday) or you've got a trip of about 9 days.

Anyway, have you looked at Expedia? I just looked at flights from MCI to LAS using their flexible dates feature, and pretty much everything leaving on a Monday in March and flying back 2 days later (Wednesday) was in the low $200s. I think they all involve a connection in Denver, but I didn't see any non-stops. The Wed-Fri stuff I looked at was more expensive, so Mon-Wed may be your only option at a reasonable price.

Southwest fares from KC to Vegas are over a wide spread. It would be cheaper to watch for an airfare special and pay for the room.

There were dates in both January and early February when direct roundtrip flights including fees and taxes were around $100.

March is also popular for Vegas because of the NCAA tournament. I really don't think it's the time to expect bargains.

You can still get a fare of $113+ depending on when you travel. Try the "Flexible Dates" option at travelocity.

Go to bestfares.com and use the quickfare finder. You'll probably have to click on the beta test site to get to it. It shows United KC to LV for $123 roundtrip in March. Bestfares tickets are cheap, but often the routing is odd, but it's certainly worth checking out.

I have found that flying into LAS on a Friday is very expensive as compared to a weekday.

Southwest has the only nonstop flights to Vegas from Kansas City. We take Southwest just to avoid the longer flight, maybe changing planes, and the attendant potential delays, lost luggage, etc... On a short trip, we hate to spend more time in an airplane. I've rarely seen Southwest's fares go down as you get closer to the date, especially to a popular destination. Usually they go up as the flights fill up - ie, the lower priced options are no longer available. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are Southwest's least expensive days.
