Price of gas on West coast?

We'll be travelling from Seattle to San Jose in a few weeks. What's a gallon of gas going for out there?

Thanks!
Jean

The gas depends on which section you'll be in, and what kind of gas/car you'll have, but plan to spend 1.80 to 2.00 a gallon.

The average price for regular unleaded in San Jose is $1.62. The following website gives average prices for gas in different markets across the country.

Just walked back from a cafe and checked out gas prices at Chevron on Van Ness Avenue - $1.79 for regular unleaded. The Shell up the block was 20 cents more a gallon! How does that work?

The cheapest in Portland right now is $1.29 east of Portland at Troutdale on I-84. In town it averages about $1.45. It will be about that all the way down I-5. Coast will be even more. Washington seems to run a little less. Remember, in Oregon you are not allowed to pump your own gas. I know its weird, but we seem to be stuck with it forever.

Try this link.

From here you can check prices almost any where. Just change cities.

Well, it's just the same as where you live. Prices vary from station to station. You can drive all over comparing prices to save a few cents on a fill-up. But, since you do have to fill up and you're going to be there anyway, why quibble over it ahead of time???

Maxie,
I was just curious. We live in Alabama and are paying $1.35 right now(though this is higher than most nearby cities by about a dime - fodder for talk in the local coffee shops!).

I had heard horror stories that gas prices on the West Coast were as high as $3, and Fodor's folks are always(mostly) happy to help future visitors get answers to their questions, so I figured this was the place to go.

I'll check the web sites recommended above.

Thank you to all who responded with your local prices. No, it wouldn't have been a "trip killer" if gas had really been $3 a gallon, but it's nice to know it's not.

Now on to finish reading all those pesky, un-nerving posts about how awful San Francisco is....(and I thought I was being a good wife/Momma taking my crew to see the sights there.)

C'est La Vie.

Jean, I hope you're not skipping SF because of the infighting on this board! There are lots of people here who have a great time bashing SF because it's such a popular destination and they like to spoil the fun. Please don't substitute San Jose for SF. We live in Palo Alto and so are in both cities all the time and there's really no comparison. Gas today just off 101 in Mountain View was $1.53 at Vallerjo. You might not know this station, but they're very good and usually have the best prices.

Oh, and David,

The site you recommended is wonderful(www.fuelgaugereport.com)! Thanks! Seems to be very accurate, too.

The fuelgaugereport price for Seattle is around 5-10c higher than many stations; I haven't paid more than $1.38 for weeks.

A note about Oregon - "mini-serve" only, i.e., a real human (well, humanoid) actually fills your tank. Wow, what decadence.
