Pre-theatre dining recommendations?

Seeing Proof at the end of September (thanks for the earlier feedback) and wonder if anyone has pre-theatre dining favorites?

Thanks in advance,

Mary

Had a marvelous pre-Producers dinner at the Four Seasons in July - 3 courses for $49 if booked through the ticket agency, $55 otherwise. Three of the four of us had the duck and it was outstanding. 5:30 reservation left plenty of time for leisurely dining and cab to the theater.

The Hour Glass Tavern (I believe is on 46th and 8th). It's a cute little place that is more or less a fixed price type place. I'm pretty sure that you'll pay just under $20/ person for a 3 course meal. I guess their food is French style, but they don't limit themselves to saying.
They have a great knack for moving people in and out of there, without making you feel rushed. While they're efficient the food is very good. It's called the Hour Glass, because they have hour glasses over each table. They reserve the right to use these hour glasses on dawdlers. Basically, they'll turn the hour glass if you're taking too much time. It's their way of insuring that theater patrons don't miss the opening. However, I've never actually seen this used.
A very good, inexpensive Italian place that is in that is around the corner is Don Giovanni's (45th & 8th). Their Salad Niccoise is great.

Nets Fan,

Is the Hour Glass Tavern appropriate for families with pre-teens? Dressy--not?? It sounds like a cute please--more info. if you can. Thanks!

My wife and I ate at a very good Italian restaurant named "Ray's Real Pizza and Italian Restaurant" on 8th near 45th. Seating is in the back and it is run by Pappa Ray and his family. They do not rush you and we saw all modes of dress there... Prices very reasonable for the area.

Nocello's, West 55th between Broadway and 8th. That was my favorite. We just walked up at about 6:15 and got seats.

We also liked Joe Allen's, where we did the same (even though we'd stopped earlier in the day and could not get reservations).

A more casual place but still great is John's Pizzeria, right in the theater district.
