All along 9th ave from the 40's to the 50's there are inexpensive ethnic places with good food. I like the Siam Inn on 8th betw 51-52 for excellent Thai. Nothing fancy. Make sure to have curry puffs.

The Soup Kitchen International(of Seinfeld soup nazi fame) is on 55th betw Broadway & 8th.

Maison on Broadway betw 53-54 is a French bistro with big outdoor dining area that's open 24/7.

Maria Pia for Italian 51 betw 8-9th has a $19.95 dinner. Shaan for Indian (I also like Utsav) in Rock Center has a $25 prix fixe dinner. Trattoria Dell'Arte on 7th & 56th has great thin crust pizza and an antipasto bar.
