Pre theater specials

I will be at the Hilton at 54th st and Ave of Americas for 12 days in July. Any suggestions for Pre theater Specials or other cheap-moderate options close by(lets say within 10 blocks). Thx

If you like Turkish food, we enjoyed Dervish, at 47th & 7th.

Shaan, an Indian restaurant at, I think 50th & 5th, was very good.

I will be there for 12 days so am looking for a choice of pre-theater specials as I assume they are the best value for the money and the bridge tournament gets out at about 4:30. So any cuisine is welcome. Thx

Becco!

k_999_9 May 19th, 2004 09:58 AM

Suggest Becco, too.

It has an all-you-can eat pasta special -- the choices change every day. Can't remeber the price, but you won't find anything much cheaper in NY. Plus, as I remember, they have a special wine list where no selection is more than $20/bottle. Seems to fit your request.

Hourglass Tavern - down restaurant row (46th?), dirt cheap by NYC standards, continental with italian influence. I think $12-18 got you a meal with salad. It was probably the best $20 sit down meal I've had in the city. Has a kinda quaint atmostphere, too. The "hourglass" implies that they will get you out in less than an hour so it make's for a good pre-theatre place.

I like the Four Seasons Restaurant (not the hotel) on 52nd between Park and Lexington for their pre-theater prix fix dinner. At around $45 it is moderately priced by New York City standards and a bargain compared to what they normally charge.

Any more, I am going to be there for 12 days. Thanks

Last time I stayed at the Hilton I had dinner one night at the Carnegie Deli, and it was very good.

Pizza in the cafeteria int he basement of the Trump Tower on 5th Avenue was really good and surprisingly inexpensive, considering the location.

Are you a Hilton Honors member? If not, join immediately. Then request a club floor, 39 - 44. On 44, a very nice free con'tl bfst is served each day, cookies all afternoon, drinks and appetizers from 4-7ish. Have had many meetings there and 'club 44' (as we call it), has made a very positive difference!

I think this is very smart, developing list of places with pre-theatre prix fixe dinners.

New to me, I liked it a lot, Indian, slightly odd address -- enter on 46th or 47th, between 6th & 7th Avenues - nearer 6th - Utsav (don't worry there is a sign). Very pretty, nice food, good prix fixe - 3 courses/about $23.

Actually get a Zagat's and look in it, I think they list prix fixes & $20.04 specials.

Cafe Botanica at the Essex House $35 pre theater, a good value.

A couple clarifications on the above posting about Hilton Honors benefits: *Joining the program doesn't guarantee a free upgrade to the Towers. It, naturally, depends on availability.
*You pay for the drinks in the Towers lounge between 4-7 p.m. Only the hors d'oeuvres are free.
As for dining options, Remi, an excellent Italian restaurant, is right next door to the hotel on West 53rd. It's not cheap, but it's good.
Also, Redeye Grill, an excellent seafood restaurant, is nearby at 56th & 7th.

John's Pizzeria, on 42nd, about a block west of Time Square - nice building, good pizza, cheap.

Also Virgil's Barbeque - 42nd, 1/2 block east of Time Square. Great BBQ sauce!

The Four Seasons restaurant has been heading downhill and is not worth anything close to what they charge.

It is a bit far crosstown from where you are, but Efendi on Second Ave and 54th is excellent cheap food. They call themselves "Turkish fast food," although it is really just pretty cheap Turkish food that you can get to go.

For a burger, Burger Joint in the Parker Meridien hotel is really good. 7th and 57th.

Of course, there are Carnegie and Stage delis on 7th Ave.

Still looking for additional suggestions. Thx

My favorite is Dervish Turkish, I think the pre-theater prix fixe is $20 for a 3 course meal with a huge variety of choices (most special are very limited). It's located on 146 W. 47th St. (bet. 6th & 7th Aves.). Another place that I like is La Cascina Italian. They also offer a pre-theater special, I think for $24. If you order from the regular menu, they offer 10% off if you show them theater tickets or print out the coupon on Playbill.com. There food is very good. They're located on 9th Av betw 45th and 46th Streets.

Do you have to eat in that area every night? Times Sq area is generally touristy and overpriced (with some exceptions mentioned above). There are some great restaurant neighborhoods in NYC with huge varieties at very moderate prices. My favorite area is the E. Village for best value/quality/variety.
