eurotraveler, I have an Eating Out in Portland thread on the Portland TripAdvisor forums, take a look!

I was spoiled, living in the heart of the Pearl District gave me plenty of opportunities for good eating out..Ten 01 is not so new now..( I lived a block away)..and it is true, it seemed every week a new restuarant opened..some staying open about a month and closing..like Graze ..but the Good places remain..

Wayne, even if you cannot squeeze all these places in for dinners or lunches, bluehour and Vault and Paragon are all reeeally good and have great Happy Hours where you can sit outside and enjoy the sights ( they walk by lol) and great drinks and bites.
Screen Door is a great Southern breakfast, never got to Simpatica but it is generally always raved about...

Just reading this post reminds me how wonderful the food and restaurants are in Portland (as others have mentioned). Really world class.

Not only that, but my favorite grocery store is in Portland, New Seasons.
Whole Foods is just ok in comparison.

Yeah, it's kinda hard to say Ten 01 is new when it's already on its third exec chef. From what I've heard, this one should stick, but I've only been once for dinner - chef #2 - and wasn't overly impressed.

I also agree with Scarlett to put Carlyle on your list, Wayne. Another really good restaurant. But I haven't been to Gravy, Screen Door, or Simpatica yet, either. Other side of town from my house.

Thanks for the Terroir review, eurotraveller. I like small plate menu places where you can try several dishes without busting the bank or gut. ;-) Have you been to Rockets yet? I think it might be similar.

beacbum, here is something I found at the food & drink site..

I was wondering about Terroir, we never got to the Eastside of town as much as we would have liked to..there were just so many great places to eat on the Westside, we didn't have enough time to see / eat at them all LOL...

Hi Wayne, we had a very nice dinner at Bluehour tonight in Portland before heading over to our beach cottage on the coast for a few weeks, it's better than ever, love their Gnocchi with Black Truffles here and we had a really good Tomato and Fennel Soup, the Chocolate and Currant Mousse was very good and service perfect! ***kim***

Wow, kim, that does sound good, it must have been tiresome to have to drive for 2 hours to get to Astoria after dinner..!

Well, Ten01 is very new compared to Wildwood, Higgins, South Park, etc.

The newest one I was referring to is Terroir, which just opened a couple of months ago.

Kim, I also LOVE the gnocci with black truffles at Blue Hour! Soooo tasty!

I am another disappointed Wildwood diner.

From my experience there, I gather it is one of those chef run places that leaves dining room management up to long-time waiters whom they trust but who are not trustworthy because they cater to favored repeat customers while giving short shrift to diners they figure they will never see again.

Chefs, do what Tom Douglas did long ago--wise up to your wait staff.
