Portland Oregon- hotel & restaurant tips?

I believe his last words were "Where the h*ll did all those Mexicans come fr-"
No, I was referring, of course, to "If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all." Drilled into my juvenile head by Walt Disney's scriptwriters in the 1950s. The idiots.
Oops.

Gardyloo!! I am astounded! That is who started that saying???

Wasn't that from Bambi?
Mom Bunny: Now what is it that your father always said, Thumper.
Thumper: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Out of the mouth of bunnies!
As for David Crockett, when I was a little kid, living in S. Illinois, one of our local radio stations would pick the card submitted by someone who had a birthday that day, and play their favorite song. My card was picked on my seventh birthday, and they played my song, "Davey Crockett." That's about the only thing I've ever won, but I've never forgotten the joy.

I'm beginning to wish Fodors would put a stop to the use of those emoticons...some posters don't seem to understand that a little goes a LONG way.
At any rate, still hoping to get some feedback on Murata. Also, is India House still up and running across from The Real Mother Goose? On 10th and something (Salmon?)?

Gardyloo sums it up: Message: If this thread gets too personal, the editors will pull it.
No kidding, Why then do some continue to do this over and over regardless what the topic may be? Who cares anyway, as we're all faceless nameless people who can say anything, no one really knows if it's true. This is a travel board people, we don't really care. Please try to remember that.

I'm not referring to you, PamSF, but there are too many people here who think that making fun of people is indicative of a sense of humor. It is not.
I started reading the Portland threads recently b/c I took a survey on www.findmyspot.com. Their #1 suggestion for me of a place to move was....Portland!! We actually visited Portland a dozen years ago and we LOVED it. This east coaster started subscribing to the Oregonian and wanted to move there. Then, my husband reminded me that he didn't actually have a job out there; two kids came along, and well, life moves forward.
I just recently read a book about Portland and it does really seem like my kinda town. Then I start reading these threads, and Yikes. It's sort of like Jerry Springer - you don't want to admit you watch it, but you start watching it one day, and you cannot believe there are people out there who carry on like they do!

Karen- I'll admit that some of us appear to be picking on a certain poster, but stay here long enough and you'll understand why a bunch of us normally polite people have been pushed to our current behavior.
For a long while now, she has tried to dominate the Portland/Oregon coast boards. It isn't a case of her saying "I like this hotel and here's why..."
Its " I like this hotel and the rest of you are wrong" or " this restaurant is rated #1 on such board, so you must not have sat in the right seat" or similar.
On top of that, it is clear that she has never even been to many of these places. "You must eat here, because I drove by and the outside looked romantic..."
We travel and we post our detailed reviews, and we make a sincere effort to pass on our experiences. It gets really tiring to have her argue with us,a nd I think we all reached our breaking point at this same time.
Sorry that it makes for convoluted posts. Portland is a great city, and there is a lot of good advice here.

Hi Karens, btw, I 100% agree with icuy's comments.
Now, a husband not having a job where you want to move to is such a minor detail, LOL
Seriously though, I hope that you all can visit Portland one of these days. I have family in Portland and IMHO Portland if a fantastic city. Something for everyone. And so much wonderful food. When you can work it out it would make a wonderful family vacation.

Well said lcuy, I agree as well.
You know, the poster who lcuy is referring to is going to make a very
brief stop in the area where I live
and, same as last year, will post her experiences as though she is an expert on the area. Everytime there is a question about the area she will answer
as though she is intimate to the daily
in's and out's of the place. Sound familiar Portland-ites?
So, to those who think we are not "being kind"-wait till she arrives in your town and tells you over and over and over again that you did not,
could not, have the experience that you had.
It is annoying on the good end of the scale and freakingly nutz on the other.
Now I will go sit with Pam and Scarlett.

razzledazzle, that is what gets on my nerves, whether it is me or someone else posting talking about an experience they had and the someone trying to tell you that you didn't! Grrr, LOL. But really, it is sooo annoying.
To state they had a different experience is a whole different matter of course.
And I have lived where I am now 4 1/2 years and do not know about every little thing.
I have been in Portland I don't know how many times and still learn things here on Fodors. In fact never knew about the 5th Ave Suites and a grandson in Portland works for Kimpton. Thanks to Scarlett I am now famaliar with this obviously fabulous hotel. But since I have family in Portland I will not get to experience I guess. quot;> Oh well, how beautiful to have family in Portland, I really am not complaining in any way. And even if one does "know" a city, cities keep changing. Nothing remains the same, so reading about others experiences is fun and educational IMHO.

lcuy - thank you for your post. I understand your frustration and respect your point of view. As you all know, I get aggravated, too, by things.
I've just check the Portland threads recently, and on several it seemed that some people (and I'm far too lazy to go look it up; plus I'm really not interested in singling anyone out) were being un-necessarily nasty. At least with me, if people disagree, that's fine. But when it resorts to catty insults, I tend to lose respect for that poster, even if I think the original poster is totally annoying!
lcuy, you made your point very well, and I think, much more effectively, than if you replied, well, so-and-so is a mentally challenged idiot or something like that.
I have noticed that the latter part of this thread seems to involve only women. Where are you men?
And to all who take the time to respond with in depth replies to what this thread was actually about IN THE FIRST PLACE: I, for one, am always impressed that strangers would take the time to help others out. And you locals can answer questions so much better than any guide book!
