Clark has good suggestions for a short tour of LA that hits many highlights and there is a good view of the Hollywood Sign from the Observatory.

When the encampments in Venice are removed, they return within days/weeks. The clearance is a stunt by the County Sheriff (not LAPD) to make it look like he, and only he, is doing something about the problem. He likes to wear a cowboy hat while observing the removals. I drive past multiple encampments on my way to work in Beverly Hills, and none of them are in Venice or DTLA,. There are even encampments in the vegetation along the sides of the freeways.

No snarkyness taken, I was just throwing out some suggestions. 10 days is plenty to see highlights, if you don't mind moving around a lot. It shouldn't take more than bout 16-17 hours between PDX and LAX if you drove fairly straight north to south, so they have some time to deviate from the path during 10 days. I personally like driving around and seeing new things. We just finished camping in Namibia for 7 days and drove over 1850 miles during that time (we wanted to see as much as possible, lol).

Great article. Mostly about La Jolla and San Diego, which I would rather spend time in over LA any day.

That is using looooong, and seriously boring in many stretches I-5 which is many miles (in some cases hundreds of miles) from the sites/areas they want to see. And even that is really understated. With congestion in places like Sacramento, Stockton and the LA Basin along the route, construction and the masses of trucking using the route I think one would be lucky to do that drive in 19 or 20 hours butts in seats plus stops. I just think it isn't fair to tell folks 'sure, you can see all of OR/CA in 10 days - maybe not in depth but a taste'.

Wait, I thought there was no traffic and zero road delays in California??? But yes, a lot is really boring I-5. It's going to be a long road trip. Let's hope OP comes back and gives us a trip report after.

It's entirely about San Diego. LOL! Maybe the Chamber of Commerce paid for it, but it's nice to read. La Jolla, incidentally, is a suburb of the City of San Diego and not a separate town.

Jeean, yes I know the homeless come back but usually not to the area like the Boardwalk and Pier in Venice where they are highly visible to tourists. I saw a Venice webcam on Reddit earlier this am and it looked cold and tent free other than one striped tent where someone was trying to sell something.
With luck we will be rid of Sheriff Villanueva next year after the election, I myself live inside LAPD territory which is only marginally better.
There is no solution to the homeless that fits all but for the most part they can be avoided with a bit of planning.

I see two different (separate) trips here. Either would be great for 10 days. Do Portland and the Oregon Coast. Or do San Francisco and the California coast down to Los Angeles.

If you are going to include LA it would be ashame to go there only for the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There are so many cool things to see and do. Both new and old-timey stuff.

Trying to do everything you mention, plus the drive, in the timeframe you have, doesn't work really. Some choices need to be made

Although the Oregon coast is beautiful- I think the weather is more unpredictable. I think an 18 and 21 year old might like the S. California scene more. I agree you can't do justice to either portion in 10 days.
