Haven't stayed there as I live in the area. It is probably very nice inside and a great alternative to the chain hotels; however, to be honest it is not in a good location. It is a seedy part of town and the only attraction within walking distance is the local AA ballpark. That said, the ballpark is great and our Sea Dogs are fun to watch. But St. John's Street isn't really walking distance to the city arts district or the Old Port/waterfront area. Both would be a good 20 min walk or more. (I know that's not much, but Portland is a small city.) I guess it all depends on what you're looking for.
