porter service at Kahului - Maui

Aloha - Has anyone used the porter service when DEPARTING Kahului Airport Maui? Can you tell me the advantages to using it and how it works and how much to tip per bag. We have been to Maui several times, but have never used the porter service before. Flying Delta at 10pm. We will be on Maui last week of March 2006. Mahalo!

top this closer to Hawaii and California times and maybe you will get a better response.

epinions.com and trip advisor might also help. Sorry I can't offer assistance.

We use the porters every time we head home to the mainland. Here's what our family does:

Drive up to the sidewalk, right in front of the porter stand.

Wave the guy over, hand him a $20 (family of four).

Tell him to first give me my boarding pass. Then, take care of the family, unloading the luggage from the car, taking it to the screener and give my family their boarding passes.

After he gives me my boarding pass and then unloads the car, I head to the rental car place (usually Budget)to return the car. It's worked efficiently for us, for years. I then return to the airport via the shuttle and catch up with my family.

Always hand your big tip to the porter when you state your desires and you'll be well taken care of.

TravelTess - you might have to fill in some of the blanks for me....They have our boarding passes? Can you tell me exactly how this works? I just give him the $20 (we are a family of 4) and stay with the porter or how does this work...can ya walk me thru it please?
We do the same when arriving and departing with the car....hubby is the only one to go on shuttle. Then he comes around and picks us up in the car and we have the luggage. Works great! Thanks for your reply!

I, not my husband, wave the porter over, tell him that I want to get my boarding pass first, hand him a $20 and as we walk to his desk outside, I tell him what I want him to do (I outlined this for you before)he gives me my pass and meanwhile hubby is with the kids an starts to unload the luggage. The porter comes back to the car finishes unloading it and puts it all on his cart. I head for the rental car agency as the porter gives my family their boarding passes, tags the bags, takes them to the ag check and then checks them into the airline. My husband is a brilliant man, genius...but can't do the simple things so I take the car back and I arrange the details with the porter. LOL...men! All hubby has to do is make sure the kids are safe and keep an eye on our carry-ons.

I believe Riggsie's question is "How the hell can a porter give out boarding passes"?

Whoa....maybe I should rethink posting here, but will risk it!

I think maybe she is referring to curbside check in. We did this in Honolulu, except our tip was last...still great service!

We are frequent visitors to Maui and ALWAYS use the curbside porter service.
we tip about $5 per bag (we usually bring 1 suitcase and 2 golf bags), not including my boogie board! They ask for your ID and then take the bags and check everything thru, including agriculture, and as you watch the Passenger lines STAND THERE and not move, the porter hands you your BOARDING PASS and you proceed to your plane. An added tip. If you are traveling with someone, give the porter all your flite info and IDs and whomever is in charge of the rental car can proceed to check it in while you wait for the porter to check you in and give you all the boarding passes and you wait for the car rental person to return. Then you go thru security all together. If you have coach tics on Aloha and want to upgrade to 1st class ($300), tell the porter when you arrive and you can both go to the 1st class Aloha counter and see if there is availability. Just ask yourself. "Is the food worth it?" (!!!) The seats aren't much bigger than coach, and if you want to guarantee yourself something edible, bring it from your hotel or buy it at the airport restaurant. They do make bearable sandwiches!
Aloha

He holds out his hand and gives them to us. Not too tough to figure out. Do you kiss your mother with that mouth, Rusty?

I actually meant that I thought we had to be present at the airline desk when they checked ID and gave you boarding pass... I didnt questioned a Porter having the boarding passes and info about the flight on a screen...
