Port or Starboard on Southbound Alaska Cruise?
Our family is considering a southbound cruise on Regent's Mariner in August 2007. The voyage starts in Anchorage and ends in Seward. I had understood that port was the preferred side, but my agent is saying that either side is good as you will see land for much of the voyage, i.e. the Inside Passage. However, one of the children in the group is handicapped and will need to spend much of each travel day inside the cabin, as would various family members, so the side with the best view is EXTREMELY important for this voyage.
Which side in your experience would be the preferred side for the best views?

A southbound cruise that starts in Achorage and ends in Seward? Must be a very short cruise! Did you mean a round trip or does it perhaps end in Seattle?
Or maybe its been too many years since my last cruise and I am just confused!!
If it is southbound from Anchorage/seward, I would choose to be on the left side (is that port?) so as to be facing the mainland at all times vs part of the time having the islands in view. We took a cruise from vancouver to Seward and were very happy to be on the mainland side of the ship.

Is this the one? Does your cruise begin August 8th or 22nd?

Cicerone, your cruise starts in Seward and ends in Vancouver. Maybe there is transportation from Anchorage to Seward included in a price?
7-day cruise, icluding one full day in sea, starts at around $4,000 per person.

Thanks Marna, I was using Seward as the general location, I am aware that the actual location from which the ship departs in Anchorage. I am aware of the price as well. I just need advice on which side of the ship would be preferred on a southbound journey if one were to be in a cabin for most of the journey, and on the Mariner which is an all balcony ship so views presumably will be good from the cabins. Many thanks so far for the advice.

I already answered your main question and included extra info for those who would be interested in this type of cruise.
Btw, your ship does not depart from Anchorage. Good luck and I bet each member of your family is going to enjoy this cruise. Having a balcony is a great asset on this cruise.
I hope you are going to spend a few days on mainland before your cruise starts.
Another thing, I just learned yesterday that next Monday PBS is going to have a program "Inside Passage"
