Has anyone been to the Pompeii exhibit in Times Square Discovery NYC? I am thinking of going this Saturday, and without discounts it will be $28 - wondering if it was worth it. Did you enjoy it? How comprehensive was it? Are you on your feet & herded right through? I have a bad knee and wouldn't want to be standing for 1-1 1/2 hours.

There was a fairly positive review in the NY Times last week. Look on the web site for it. I don't think you should have to pay full-price. Theatermania.com has a coupon to get tickets for $20 ... not a huge discount, but something ... you just print out the ad and bring it to the ticket booth there. And they might be handing out coupons in Times Square. Look around the TKTS booth.

If it is the same as the one we saw in Charlotte,it was very good

My wife took our kids to the King Tut at the Discovery Center. It was expensive for what it was, there were a lot of add on fees for this or that and it wasn't really worth it given how great the Egyptian exhibit is at the Met.

I would suggest the Met has a fantastic exhibit of Roman art and sculpture. For $20 per adult with free admission for kids under 12 you get that, access to some of the world's most famous Impressionist pieces, and thousands of other works of art.

I'll go when my niece the Classics Scholar shows up. She's been there and spent about an hour at the Met bookstore trying to decide which of two gorgeous coffee table books about Pompeii she was going to spend Met gift certificate money on.

Please note, that at Met Museum admission amount is suggested as opposed to MoMA, where it is mandatory.

Often museums have an understanding, you lend me a Goya for an exhibit and I'll give you a Cezanne and a draft choice. The Pompeii exhibition is sponsored by the Discovery station, so I wonder about the quality of their exhibtion.

Is it "The Last Days of Pompeii"? If so, as noted above, it was VERY good, and I believe we paid that price to see it.

In the past goldstar.com has had discounts for other exhibits at the Discovery Center. It's not currently on for this but keep an eye out before you go.

I guess I can see if there any any discounts being handed out or at TKTS when I go in. Ryan, I am a member at the Met and I agree! But I was looking for a specific Pompeii experience here.

Friends of mine got Groupon discounts for the (they said very mediocre) Tut exhibit at Discovery - you might want to try that route and see if they have anything.

ninasdream, if you do go, I for one would love a review. I agree about "looking for a specific Pompeii experience here", and can't quite justify the entrance fee at the moment. If it's as spectacular as what 2catlover and Gretchen saw, I'll start saving my pennies!

I just noticed that if you contribute $75 to Channel 13 (PBS), you can get 2 VIP tickets (includes the audio tour) to the exhibit. Seems like a good deal plus a good cause to me. I know it's not a savings, but if you were planning to contribute anyway, it would be a good deal.

My SIL and my niece, the Classics scholar, went yesterday. They said it was pretty good but expensive. They found 5 dollar discounts. My niece said the scholars are still arguing about whether the volcano happened in Oct or Aug and the exhibit took a position she didn't necessarily agree with. She also said the amount of information wasn't overwhelming. (The Leonardo one was in my opinion)

Anyway, enjoy! I'll get there one of these days.

For those interested in Pompeii and its artifacts -- at the Metropolitan Museum one can view one of the world's greatest treasures from that area -- the Boscoreale Cubiculum - an entire room with the wall frescoes intact and in the original condition as it was in 79AD (year of the volcano). It is from a villa in the community of Boscoreale - very close to Pompeii

i went to the pompeii exhibit a few days ago and it is well worth the price of admission. someone was handing out $5.00 coupons in times square so that helped make the decision. i had seen the king tut exhibit and thought it was awful, so i was a little concerned what this one might be like. it's a really fantastic exhibit - i would highly recommend it. the new york times does have a good review of it. the only problem with this exhibit is the lack of signage directing you thru it. there just isn't any! i saw some folks leave after visiting the first gallery thinking they had seen the full exhibit. you have to watch a 2 minute film in a room at the halfway point that opens onto the next galleries but no one explains that to you. the signage around the art objects is also poorly placed - you almost have to get on your hands and knees to read about the some of the items you're viewing. other than those quibbles it's a remarkable exhibit. don't miss this one!

jofdo, thank you for the review and the signage info. I didn't have time last time I was in the city, but it looks like it runs thru at least June. Did you visit on a weekend day, by any chance? All the coupons I found were weekday only.

yes - it was a weekday. that's the only discount i've seen so far. there are student & senior prices as well if that helps.

Just wanted to say that I am going this weekend and found a discount code: BBOXJULY which gives you $6.50 off each adult or senior ticket. My husband, Uncle and I are going so that is a $19.50 discount; tickets are $26.50 per person so it is almost a buy 2 get 1 free deal, if 4 people attend then it can be looked at as that 4th person being free ($26 discount for 4 tickets). The code is good for weekday or weekend tickets and only has to be mentioned at the ticket counter or through the online ticket center. I hope you have fun and maybe I will see you there!
