There are too many great places to pick just one, but we have our own favorites in different categories. I hesitate to use the term "best," since this is so subjective, but we do have favorite places

Pa`ia Fish Market for a great piece of fish without all the pretentitous trappings--just excellent, fresh fish.

Our favorite special night out, romance and wine restaurant is Capische.

Favorite place to send visitors who want to be wowed and don't care how much they are spending is Mama's

Favorite place for local/Asian food, kimchee and a $2 beer, after a show or just when we're in Wailuku is Tiffany's Bar & Grill

New favorite sushi spot is Toji Japanese Buffet. Took friends there last night and everyone was impressed and happy. The fish was expertly prepared and fresh, fresh, fresh. No fancy rolls, but lots of selection and an excellent value.

Our favorite place for watching the sunset AND great food, Planatation House. Wow, what a view.

For small plates is Tastings. This place just keeps getting better.

Of the ones we sampled on our recent first-time trip (Mama's, Io, Pacific-O, David Paul's Lahaina Grill, Hula Grill), I would say Lahaina Grill was the best. But Mama's was a great experience, and the food at Io was awesome. Lunches at Pacific-O (Io's sister restaraunt) were so good, we at there twice.

I'o for combined oceanfront garden setting and fine food. Roy's Kahana Grill for fine food in a "happenin'" atmosphere. Sansei for sushi/pacific rim cooking.
