POLL: Best family vacation within the states?

What would be a great vacation for a family of 4 (two teenager boys) to go to next year? I would like to keep it within the states.

We live in FL, so that is out of the question and are originally from NY.

What do they/you like to do? If you like the outdoors - I'd suggest a national parks theme: The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Grand Tetons, Rocky Mountain National Park, Bryce and Zion, etc.

Or you could stay a little closer to home and do a Williamsburg/Busch Gardens vacation.

It's hard without knowing what you like to do...

I have 2 teenage boys and we have enjoyed the following as a family: Zion/Bryce/N.Rim, Western S. Dakota/Mt. Rushmore area. We do like history and really enjoyed a trip to Gettysburg. Broadening to Canada may have been our best vacation ever in the Banf/Jasper National parks area of Alberta. We are kind of outdoorsy and wildlife oriented.

How about a week at a cabin on a lake in WI or MN (fishing intensive) or maybe a houseboat rental on land between the lakes or on the border waters of MN and Canada?

Like I say, we are outdoors minded but I hope this gives you some ideas.

we also have two teenaged boys. If they are outdoors types like ours, we've had great trips to Vail (hiking, horseback riding, golf, pools, white water rafting, mountain biking, etc). Minnesota (Gull Lake) is also great - fishing, swimming, golf, tennis, water skiing, etc. They liked Williamsburg (some history but also golf, Newport News, theme parks, etc).

I 2nd the SW S. Dakota. We drove to Little Big Horn in Montana, back past Devil's Tower in Wyoming then stayed for 5 days in a cabin in Hill City SD (Mountainview Lodge)had plenty 2 do and hated 2 leave. Drove over to Badlands and Wall then home 4000 miles in 12 days. Teen boys loved it.

We have 4 boys/1 girl and we have found a great variety of things to do on several trips to Portland, OR.
You could visit the following sites with and hour or so of Portland:
*Downtown/Saturday Mkt (funky shopping)
*The scenic drive that follows the gorge and water falls (fun to explore)
*Mt Hood (snowboarding)
*Smith Rock (climbing)
*Mt St Helens (just awesome cool)
*Spruce Goose
*Ft Vancouver Historic Area
*Ocean Beaches (Cannon and Ecola Beach, Seaside, Astoria)
*Louis and Clark attractions (one in Portland, one in Seaside and one on the Gorge)
There is so much to do... trick is finding some sun between the lousy freakin' weather.
