Pointe Reyes or Half Moon Bay

Will be in San Fran area last week in July. Staying 3 days-2 nights in either Half Moon Bay or Pointe Reyes. Is one more interesting than the other? We enjoy all activities.

Probably lots of fog in late July. Pt Reyes is "wild & wooley" and has lots of nooks & crannies. It's very pristine & nature oriented. HMB is a city on the coast with McDonalds, strip malls, and some nice beaches - but the better/more remote ones are north & south. HMB has a very nice Main St with good restaurants, cafes, shops, etc.

If you want to experience the Pacific Ocean & nature, visit Pt Reyes.

I second Point Reyes. If you drive to McClure Beach, you should get to see some of the elk. Drake's Beach is nice for walking along the water because it is protected from the NW winds. Limantour Beach offers walks along the slough between the mianland and the beach itself. There is an earthquake walk by the park headquarters. For restaurants, there is Vladimir's in Inverness (haven't been there in years), and a number of eateries in Point Reyes Station. Cow Girl Creamery sells picnic items.

I think they are both great, just depends on what you are looking for. Stu gives a pretty good comparison and contrast of the 2 areas.

Just an aside - please everyone, pray (or whatever you do) for nice weather this weekend. This is the first weekend in awhile that I don't have a lot of school work, house work, or work work to get done (no family obligations either, so this is like the alignment of the planets) and I want to GO SOMEPLACE. And Point Reyes is where I want to go!!! Last time I had a reasonably clear weekend (and planned to go to Point Reyes) it RAINED!!! Now it looks like it may rain again.

I want to go hiking. I want to picnic on the beach. I want to zone out while watching the waves. I want to feel the sun and wind on my face.

>>I want to feel the sun and wind on my face<<

You'll get the latter of those two for sure.

I would also choose Pt. Reyes, but as Stu states, the wind there can be strong. Make sure you take the appropriate gear.

I just don't want that wind to be mixed with rain - LOL!

My DH is more the Point Reyes type (we went there last June), and I like HMB. I also like going to Princeton by the Sea, and eating at Barbara's Fish Trap.
