Locals: i would like opinions on the best oyster or sft shell crab poboy in New Orleans. Also hearing great things about Irenes, is it worth 1 of 4 dinners ill have in march? Finally is Brennans a good Sunday brunch spot ive done the Palace.

I've only had one po boy in NO, so I can't help w/comparisons.
Avoid Brennan's.

There are 2 places I can recommend for poboys--the Acme Oyster House in the Quarter (just off Bourbon near Canal) and Mother's (in the CBD, I think). Irene's is definitely worth it and I too avoid Brennans.

Frankie & Johnnie's -- can't remember the location. Best dressed po'boy I've ever had.

I had a shrimp PoBoy at Mother's and although it was very good, it was also a $12 sandwich. I didn't go as they were closed in the summer, but i've heard great things about Uglesich's(??) for PoBoys.

I ate at Irene's and it was one of the best meals i can remember. They don't take reservations, so perhaps go on a non-Friday or non-Saturday nite.

I loved the VERY down home crazy atmosphere of Mother's; however, my husband and I ordered the famous Ferdi's Special (roast beef po'boy)and were very disappointed. We each took a bite of our sandwich and looked at each other like "ok, what's the big deal about this?" I don't know if all their po'boys are this disappointing, though. We're thinking about going back to NO this year and, if we do, will try some other po'boys. If you end finding a place that has good ones, please come back and post it! Have fun.

I enjoy the Ralph (Ferdi with cheese), but really liked the fried oyster poboy at Mothers. I got the fried oyster one while they were still serving breakfast at around 10:30 am. It burned the inside of my mouth it was so hot, but man was it good
Be sure to have some Beignets and avoid Hurricane stands/booths set up on the street.

There's a place called Domalisa's that is supposedly the rad.

Two eggs (Eggs Benedict) at Brennan's is $24.00 - definitely avoid it!

Mothers and Central Grocery for sure.

I was in New Orleans not too long ago and all I'd heard about before I went was the beignets at Cafe du Monde. So I went and thought they were OK, but nothing special. Just like the funnel cakes you can get at any state fair. Give me a hot Krispy Kreme doughnut any day!

Mother's for the Ferdi, I loved it! and man, does this place have "character"

Central Grocery - love that Muffeletta- one is plenty for a couple. Also buy a quart jar of the olive salad mix and make your own at home. When our olive salad runs out, we know its time for a trip back to NO!

There are so many little local restaurants to get great Po-Boys at. I would avoid the tourist places as they are inconsistant and sometimes bad. Try Liuzza's, Mandenia's, Mikes, Casemento's. Try the little CBD luch places like Serios that stay open only for lunch. And the places in Buck Town.

Louisiana Seafood on Jefferson Highway. Sid Mars in Buck Town, anything out side the French Quarter to get local food better. Drago's in Metairie has the best grilled Oysters on the Half Shell.

Emeril recommends Charlies for PoBoys.

I think Mother's is way over rated. It's on so many "Don't Miss" lists, and in such an accessible location that the lines out the door are usually long with standing room only inside.

Haven't been to all the places that "Local" mentions, but Casamento's is incredible. It serves only oysters, and only in a few ways: stew, fried, poboy. Wow.
