ten: >>. I was amazed not only by the hardships, determination and resiliency of the immigrants>but also by the oblivion displayed by some of the people on the tour.

At least the people on the tours are trying to learn something about the immigrant experience.

One tip for others visiting the museum: museum staff have a list of good places to eat in the neighborhood.

To give him the benefit of the doubt, Christina...maybe he was asking about population concentration. Or what countries they came from originally and it was very poorly worded. I know more African immigrants (rather than slave descendants) at home.

I think a lot of people are not really clear on the conditions in which immigrants really lived, or how various waves of ethnic groups were treated during various eras or even the immigration process. Depending on where you live in the Us, you get a different slice of history in school. For me it was the Oregon Trail. Most of the stuff I knew about Ellis Island and New York in general came from family history or children’s books. I probably know more about the Chinese (railroads) than Italian American immigrant experience.

Also there’s a lot of truth to ellenem’s post. Your outlook is based on your experience. There’s a lot of places where apartments aren’t even a common experience. The closest I came as a kid was a friend who lived in a duplex!

As s side note, the Museum unexpected has a great gift shop, and a wonderful book selection. I didn’t get into the tour I wanted, but really enjoyed the gift shop.
