For that evening with your grandniece: (Depending on your visit, meaning are you there on the 23rd?) How about...The Joffrey Ballet will be performing "Swan Lake" at the historic Auditorium Theatre. Perhaps Russian Tea Time for dinner prior to the performance? They have platters which 2 can share, in case you want to sample multiple dishes. Note: it's very popular with theatre and symphony goers so reservations are recommended. And, I may add, the Auditorium - not only being a gem of architectural history in Chicago, is simply one of the most beautiful venues, too.
You could very easily combine this evening out with your visit to the Art Institute in the immediate area. Millennium Park is just to the north of the Art Institute.
If you go to "The Million Dollar Quartet", which has an open run at the Apollo Theatre on N. Lincoln in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, Sapori Trattoria is quite close.
The Chicago Shakespeare Theatre (at Navy Pier) is an awesome troupe and venue (which is fashioned after the Globe in London). King Lear is on their calendar at the end of October. A great idea for your grand niece, though, for the T-day/Christmas seasons - ticket to "A Q Brothers Christmas Carol"? I normally recommend dining away from Navy Pier. The area has so many options, depends on your budget and cuisine preferences.
Just so you see how you can combine entertainment and dinner and be back at your hotel early(ier): Perhaps an early set at Andy's Jazz Club (starts at 5 p.m.), then dinner in the immediate area - restaurant of your choice and there are many in the immediate area but think about GT Fish & Oyster. As you can see, all are immediate to your hotel.
Buddy Guy's Legends (in the South Loop) has lunch acoustic sets (noon-2 p.m.) and dinner acoustic sets, starting at 6:00 p.m. The later sets usually start about 9:30 p.m.
I also highly recommend that you check out Hottix when you are visiting Chicago for discounted tickets. Many, many options.
