Please help me choose a New York hotel
Hello! Last year i was planning a Christmas trip to NY but unfotunately we coulnd't make it. Back then i have found Michelangelo for 199$/night (amazing deal but no such luck this year).
So i'm between the following hotels in the price range of 260-290$/night.
Hilton New York
Rockefeller Center Hotel
Grand Hyatt
Dylan Hotel
Elysee
Giraffe
I've found also the Novotel a little bit cheaper. (300-400$ for total stay).
Which would you recomend? From the photos i think i like best the modern look of Dylan, Hyatt or Rockefeller than Elysee for example. But i'm not sure what to pick.
(I've read in tripadvisor that Novotel is decent and in great location so i'm torn between all of these choices!)

The Novotel has an unbeatable location, so if you don't mind slightly bland rooms, this is a good choice, and the rooms are quiet considering they are right at the corner of 51st and Broadway. (FYI: A McDonald's is literally around the corner if you want a quick, cheap breakfast ... though there are certainly other good, cheap options nearby.) Starbucks is literally across Broadway. If it were me, I'd choose the Novotel and spend the savings on good food.

I've just seen that Giraffe is just 100$ more expensive than Novotel (for the entire 7 night stay) and it offers also a complimentary breakfast.
It seems to me a pretty good deal.
Is it a good and safe location?
Thank you!

The Giraffe is very well located right on Park Avenue, a few blocks from where I live. There are lots of good restaurants there, and it's a very nice hotel ... much better than the Novotel. It's also close to a subway stop and within fairly easy walking distance of Grand Central (about 15 minutes). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to you.

We just came back from staying at the Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square. Great location, very clean and seemingly freshly redone--everything bright and new-looking--and you cannot beat having the separate living room!! I am not sure of the price as we had a package that included extras, but I encourage you to check it out. Also, we never heard a sound in our bedroom which is one of my hotel dreams!!

Cristine,
I stayed at the Giraffe for 2 nights in March and it was really nice. They also have the complimentary wine/cheese in the evenings which I thoroughly enjoyed. There is a subway stop both one block north or south of the hotel, so it was convenient to get around town. The room was probably the biggest of any I've stayed at in NYC, too. To me it was a good choice because I prefer to spend my time downtown, so it just depends what you want to do in the city. Have fun!

When are you planning on coming this time? If it's at Xmas again, you can certainly do better than these for that price. You may even find the Michelangelo for $199 again closer to the date. How much theater do you intend to do? Are all of these fully cancelable reservations with no penalty?
The Elysee is owned by the same co. that owns the Giraffe (and also the Casblanca and the Library) and they all have the benefit of the free breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese. They are well run hotels and while the decor of the Elysee may look a bit tired, the hotel is much more centrally located than the Giraffe for shopping and theater. I do agree with Doug though that the area around the Giraffe is loaded with good restaurants and it more residential. Any of this group, imo, would be nice and the Casablanca is nearest the theaters.

The Rockefeller Center Hotel is new and couldn't be more centrally located. Only downside is some of the rooms are very small.
The Hilton and the Hyatt are similar large, corporate feeling hotels (that are often won on Priceline). The Hilton is closer to the theaters and in quite a good location, but not sure I'd select it for a vacation at full price.
The Dylan is in an older building nearish the Grand Hyatt on the east side. Before I'd pick that, I'd prefer the Morgan or the W Tuscany or W Court.
The Novotel is a good budget hotel with a decent location.

mclaurie all of these hotels are fully cancelable with no penalty. (i wouldn't risk of booking a hotel which i can cancel in case something occurs).
Do you suggest i could book one of these now, and maybe later on i can find better deals? (we'll be coming for Christmas).
(last year i booked Michelangelo for 199$ at the begining of July).

Yes, I'd book one or two that you like and register for email specials from any others you like. You might even phone the Michelangelo and tell them about last year and see if they'll match it. Or, if you found the price on quikbook.com, register there for specials.
