Thought there was more info on the volcano---
YES, go see the Lava....even if it is a surface flow. It is awesome. I have been to it several times.
Suggest that you go to the end of the Chain of Creaters road....approx 23miles. It is best viewed at dark.
I usually try to get there about 4-5pm.
There will be Park Rangers there to ask where the flow is at that time.
It can be an hour or more hike over the lava. Water, snacks, flashlights [and good sense of direction] and you are on your way. [[Rule of thumb....it will take 2x as long to hike back as hike in. This is due to darkness and the uneven hike over the lava.]]
The lava flow moves around...so you never know when there will be a different 'breakout'. But DO go,if you can.....this 'Big' kid really enjoys the lava...not many times we get to see something like this....awesome!
Hawaii....it's all good!!!

Despite previous posting, we had a fabulous meal at merrimans and loved it so much that we hired a sitter for our two kids and my husband and I returned the next night. Last year we went with our two kids and they enjoyed a bike tour (I think the company was called Kona bike tours-did a great job), the beach in front of the Hapuna Prince Hotel, the luau at Kona Village, the casual resturant Kona Brewing company, the Hawaiian Shaved ice place by the king's palace in "downtown" kona and the water slides at the Hilton Wailoka (sp?). they also loved seeing the lava at night and as previous poster make sure everyone brings closed-toe shoes for the hike, each person gets a flashlight and water and a snack. Also a rain jacket since it rained a litle during our hike to the lava. Have fun.
