Big Island Waipio Valley 4x4 rental

We are going to the Big Island on Christmas Break. I would like to know if anyone has rented a 4 wheel drive vehicle and driven themselves down into the Waipio Valley. The wagon tour sounds fun but is short and expensive. We could rent a 4x4 for one day and take all 5 of us down into the valley for the price of 1 1/2 tours. Do we dare drive it?

It will be their wet season (i.e., muddy!)--don't chance it!

We took a tour - in a 4x4. I highly recommend taking the tour, because the guide told us SO much about the history of that valley, floods, the war, everything. It was actually the highlight of our trip to the Big Island. GORGEOUS valley.....

We took the wagon tour in a van up and down, and in a mule-drawn wagon in the valley. It was raining hard but the valley was stunning and the wagon forded the streams. The driver was so informative, clearly loved her job.

We have done it in a Jeep Commander. That said, it is a white knuckle drive, and the driver should be very experienced in that type of situation (one way, very steep grade, other inexperienced drivers not yielding). It is beautiful and worth seeing whichever way you choose to get there.

I second the previous advice. More tourists get stuck on that access road every year than anywhere else on the island. And if you do get stuck, towing charges are outrageous.

OK, thanks for the replies. I guess it will have to be our big splurge, because we only made it to the overlook last trip and really want to go down and see the valley. Does anyone know if there are coupons anywhere? I'll have to google it.

Also, the steep drive down into the valley is the "steepest state highway in the nation" according to our tour guide.

if you do decide to do it on your own, the only rental place that may allow their 4x4's on that steep road into Waipio Valley is Harper's
http://www.harpershawaii.com/4wd.html

they're the only ones on the BI that allow you to take their 4x4's up to Mauna Kea summit, but their rates are higher than the national brands
