Destrehan Plantation on La 48(River Road)is the oldest documented plantation in the lower Mississippi. Have friends who has been there and they really enjoyed the tour. $7 admission. $4 teen admission. I will have the chance to see it in April.

I would recommend seeing Laura. It's just down the road from Oak Alley, but it's a Creole plantation. The tour is very interesting.

Meg,

You pointed out that Laura is a Creole plantation. What makes it different from the others? We will be in NO later this month and would also like to visit one of the locations.

Thank you.

well, i can reccommend tons since i'm from the area you're talking about.
first of all, definitley see destrehan plantation. i live right across the river from it, been there tons of times, but it never gets old. (it's even got a ghost that has made a few special appearences at times i've been there.)
secondly, not too far down river road from destrehan is ormond plantation. while not as extravaggant as others, this one is still nice to see. (the doll room is my favorite!)
i do strongly recommend the town of st.francisville. there's two plantations there that i recommend to everyone. first is rosedown. absolutley beautiful, especially in the spring when all the azaleas are in bloom. the tour is very interesting, and the grounds are just gorgeous.
i also recommend the myrtles, but only on a friday night at 6pm. if you didn't know, the myrtles is the most haunted house in the US. there's a ghost tour on friday nights - the guide tells the legends and whatnots. every other day, the tour is just about the history of the house. there's also a bed-and-breakfast on the top floor of the house that you might want to look at.
don't miss houmas house, tezcuco plantation or nottaway (which i think is the most beautiful).
if you have any questions, you can e-mail me and i'll help you in any way that i can.
OH! if you're coming in april, you might even want to check out the angola prison rodeo. the state prisoners put on a very entertaining show.
