By the way -- the National Zoo is built on a hill, with the "top" up near the main entrance on Connecticut Avenue (giant panda enclosure nearby) and the "bottom" down around the reptiles & lions/tigers. Luckily you won't be there in hot weather, when the hill can be a real misery, but still it's something to be aware of with your young kids.
