I agree with you that SGI does not sound like what the OP wants. I just figured I would point out what is there to be fair.

I'm sure there's a mini golf place in Destin, right? I didn't think I was asking for too much.

Yeah, it's tough with such a wide range of ages. Need to please the kids and the seniors as well! Personally, I'm fine with the beach each and every day, but some people are not as "beachy"... Need to keep everyone occupied with activities or it will be a long week with 15 people in a house!

Also, how many rooms do I need for 14 people (3 families + kids + grandma?) How much will that set me back?

You might be asking for more than you realize, as you want

- a house that sleeps 14 or so people (at least I assume that is what you mean by "vacation home" - there are condos that sleep 14, too)

- on the beach (by that I assume you mean directly on the Gulf, not a short walk away)

- 10 minutes from a selection of restaurants

- 15 minutes from mini golf and/or other children's activities (there is ONE mini golf place in Destin, as far as I know)

Although the 14 people is probably the toughest of the requirements, none of them individually is that difficult. Combining all four, however, reduces your options considerably.

A quick search of rental listings for Destin, as an example, shows you can pay anywhere from $2000 to over $7000 (that includes both condos and houses, beachfront and non-breachfront - houses will tend toward the upper half of the range) for the week of July 31-August 7.

How many rooms (I assume you mean bedrooms) depends on a lot of factors. Presumably you need at least 4 bedrooms, for the 3 couples/heads of families plus grandma. At least one of the children is in a crib, so that cuts down the number of beds you need. Beyond that, the answer depends on how many children will share bedrooms with parents and grandma (they would in a motel, after all), the exact ages of the children (how many can sleep in upper bunks?), possibly the sexes of the children, how well they get along, and so forth.

You might want to focus more on how many beds (rather than bedrooms) you need – as well as bathrooms! – and how much you are wiling to pay, and then see what is available for the dates you want. Don't delay too long in choosing, though.

Destin probably has what you want. It is a large community. Here are some houses that would fit your requests: http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals...dr-east#a23749 You could check VRBO for Fort Walton also.

Cranichin: As much as I love the Apalachicola,Port St Joe,Cape San Blas, Indian Pass area, IMO it is not what the OP needs for family activities. The Museum in Apalachicola is still there but the sailing ship is not. We sailed on her last year but this year she was closed down by the Coast Guard for safety reasons.

Cranachin,

We don't necessarily need a house. A condo will suffice. Does that broaden our options?

cd, agree that Apalachicola area is not what we need this time.

Also, at the other spectrum, PCB is not what we want either, although it fits our requirements.

See my response to starrs above. As I said, I agree that the Apalachicola area is not what the OP is looking for.

Thanks for the heads-up on the "Heritage" - the museum's website (which looks quite out of date) would lead you to believe it is still there.
