In Memphis, try for a deal at the Peabody, or even the Holiday Inn across the street. May not be in mid-price range, but for two days in Memphis, it's worth it to be close to everything downtown. Short walk to Beale and close to the water, not too far from Civil Rights Museum.

We go to Memphis frequently and have stayed in most of the downtown hotels (including the Peabody and the Holiday Inn). Our current favorite is the Marriott Residence Inn, which is just a few blocks from the Peabody. All the units have fully-equipped kitchens, and the free breakfasts are really tasty! As a bonus, McEwens restaurant is next door, and it's quite good, too.
You'd do fine with any of the places mentioned! Have fun

I always liked to recommend the Hampton Inn and Suites in Downtown Nashville because the location was outstanding...an easy (level) walk to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the lower Broadway clubs and they didn't charge for parking. The location is still good, but now they charge for parking. There is also a Hilton downtown, but it might be out of your price range. Also take a look at the Courtyard...kind of up on a hill above lower Broadway, and it is in a remodeled older (former bank) building so it is cool. There is also a Homewood Suites, but I have not stayed there (I have stayed at the other two).

Anywhere in the downtown area of Nashville should be fine. Generally, I'd stay somewhere south of the Capitol (Charlotte Ave), east of 8th/Rosa Parks, and north of Demonbreun, though that Hampton Inn is fine. I live here, so can't recommend specifics, but the Hampton Inn and Hilton that musicfan mentions get mentioned a lot and are well located.
