I only travel through LA since the family is in OC and I'm up in SF. But a friend of mine told me about Tripext which is an app that connects you to locals to get their insights on places to eat and how to best travel. I've used it a few times in SF and gotten some good feedback. Only drawback is it looks really new and not too many users on there to bring a lot of value. Worth a try to get you answers.

I'm digging up this old thread to report on a new place that opened in the Long Beach Marketplace in the old Sababa space behind BevMO!:
https://www.facebook.com/playaamorLB
(Their website is still under construction, but they've got FB and Twitter accounts, so...)
VERY fresh take on what the chef calls pocho cuisine-- neither authentic Mexican nor standard Californian, but a very unique mixture. The food is just great. Wonderful. And they have a full bar!
I'm also happy to report that the King's Fish House chain is still serving solid seafood. The DH and I had business in Costa Mesa, and on the way home we stopped at the King's on Edinger in Huntington Beach. We had a great meal AND ran into old friends who were knocking them back with the OC branch of Drinking Liberally. Good times:

We have a new Date Night joint, right in downtown Long Beach. La Traviata is serving Italian, beautifully, in the ground floor of the historic Willmore Building. Full bar, lovely cozy room, live entertainment. Closed on Sundays except for monthly brunches. The owner, Mario Nasab, is a true character and a total mensch:

New in Belmont Shore: Saint & Second. Small plates and elegant mains from the Hoffman empire (Lucille's, Hof's Hut). Bustling place when we went; full bar, an actual bar scene to go with it, and the food was really quite good:

I've reported on Mud Hen Tavern (in Larchmont) in another post. LOVE IT. Susan Feniger has a total winner:

Has anyone been to Leona in Venice yet...? I've heard nothing but good stuff.

Will have to try Playa Amor.
Have you tried Padre? Almost went but didn't want to deal with downtown LB parking and wasn't sure if it was too much of a bar/hang out.
So we just went back to Cesar's.

Speaking of Long Beach...
Tracy and I traveled to our old stomping grounds of Long Beach a few days ago to have dinner with a group of friends. Tracy had read glowing reviews about a place called Restauration. The reviews were spot on. Great food, terrific service and and a cool ambiance. If you are ever in the Long Beach area, Restauration gets my highest of recommendations! Try the Parmesan Churros to start.

To all:
I was surprised to see this thread alive and well. I had such a good time in contributing to this thread slnce it made the Forum. Since I left Los Angeles and Bel Air Glen where I lived for so many wonderful years, soon after my dear wife and dining partner, Roz, succumbed to Alzheimers.
I headed straight to Ojai, about 80 miles to the Northwest, in Ventura County where my large family had begun to accumulate, including 6 adult grandchildren and even a new three month old great-granddaughter, and my son and his wife.
I sorely miss my dear late wife, but I'm happily an Ojai dweller...I call it "my speed", (8,000 pop.), surrounded by family and the Topa Topa mountains. At a young 87, I'm home.
As for eating places, I must admit that Ojai offers numerous choices and in two years I've tried them all.
I'll begin to describe some with my next post...We welcome visitors to this gem of a town. I promise you an outstanding and unique experience.
I will post some booster material below.
Thank you and bless you all.
