Pizza in downtown Detroit

HELP! In 3 days we're leaving for a 3 night stay at the Atheneum Hotel in downtown Detroit (on Brush Street) and can't find any good pizza places (carry out is okay, but we prefer delivery). Anyone know of any to refer?

mcm, are you talking about the one on Monroe Street? I saw their website; never had Chicago stuffed pizza though...

yes, it was on Monroe street, although it has been several years, it was really good pizza. Hopefully you will get more help and I will keep thinking.

Pizza Papolous is still very good. Also, I think there is still a Buddy's downtown and they are more "Detroit" than PP.

Thanks motorcity, but I called Buddy's and they don't deliver anywhere. We need a pizza place that either delivers or within walking distance or within the route of the free hotel shuttle. Overnight valet parking is $20/night, and for that price, we're not taking our van out until it's time to check-out!

Buddy's never had a location in downtown Detroit

Niki's on the corner of Lafayette and Beaubien is right across the street from the Atheneum. It's been a while since I've been there, but I used to like their pizza. Their menu is online at www.nikisopa.net.

However, according to the Red Wings and Tigers programs the Detroit pizza place is Little Ceasar's. ;-)

According to restaurant finder... Buddy's 17125 Conant, Detroit. I have never been there but I do believe this information is correct and I think it also is the original Buddy's.

LOL about Little Ceasar's!

I have been to the Buddy's in Detroit and it is very good but they do not deliver and it is not nearby. I would get a Nikki's pizza over Pizza Papalis anytime. Both are within walking distance.

Buddy's is still in its original location at Conant/McNichols/Davison however, I wouldn't send a visitor there because it's a difficult intersection to negotiate and it's not exactly one of the premier spots in the city.

LadyPhoenix, I know you asked about pizza, but if you're looking for THE Detroit dish, you should head up Monroe across Woodward for a Coney hot dog. Lafayette and American Coney Island are next to each other at the intersection of Lafayette/Michigan and Griswold. You'll get many opinions on which is better, but I won't get into that. Both are open 24-hours and in the wee hours, you'll meet third shift workers, people heading to biker bars, college students cramming for exams, people leaving the opera and just about everyone else.

City Lights has got it! Pizza is OK, but coney's is where it's at. My FAV is Lafayette. 2 on 1 pony all the way around. Now that's coney talk there baby. 1

Don't forget Greektown which is right up the street on Monroe. My Fav there is Laikon's. Start with flaming cheese, beets and garlic, greek sausage and a loaf of greek bread, then order the Lamb chops (full order of course) along with green beans and rice. Ask for Mike, he's the only non-greek waiter, He'll take good care of you.

Where I will tell you to stay away from, is the Casino. You could lose you A** there.

I agree about the location City, just had to point out that I was right about Buddy's having a downtown location.

Lady, I also agree about getting coney dogs but understand you must have a night you want to stay in your room. Fishbones is attached to the Atheneum and has good food too.

Enjoy your trip!
