My business partner and I must venture to Pittsburgh for a meeting.

We are jaded New Yorkers.

What are the best 2 or 3 hotels for us to consider? We prefer new, "hip," and with a decent bar or restaurant scene nearby if not in the hotel.

I bid 4stars on Priceline for Pittsburgh downtown and got the Marriot for, I think it was $50.00 maybe 60.00 anyway, being jaded New Yorkers, you might be interested in the Andy Warhol museum while you're there. http://www.warhol.org/

As jaded Washingtonians, my wife and I were dissappointed with the very large Hilton downtown (despite the views of the rivers), while quite pleased with the very large Sheraton Station Square, which is located within walking distance of the Station Square bars and restaurants and a short cab ride to other more hip neighborhoods. Granted this was 2-3 years ago.

We really liked Pittsburgh.

If you're looking for NYC then you should just stay in NYC.

We stayed at The Priory hotel many years ago, it was a nice alternative to Hilton etc. It is not hip, however,...this is Pittsburgh, afterall.

The Sheraton Station Square is just what you're looking for. Look at www.StationSquare.com. It is also close to the South Side which is also "hip".

I agree about Sheraton Station Square. Get club rooms on the top floors with river views.

Note that there is a coal train that runs on tracks that are on the river side of the hotel. If you could spit out of your window it would land on the train. This is NOT a reason to avoid the hotel. It is not at all bad - not in the top floor or two, anyway.

I am not hip but I think there is a nightclub just across the street. At least there was at one time and I was surprised at the hipness there, considering it was Pittsburgh (where I grew up). Might be where Jeter would hang out after an inter-league game.

Yes I did say coal train. Another thing about SSQ is that it is not downtown, but is just across the Monongahela river (the reason you want the river view).

If you're staying at the Sharaton Station Square, you could take a ride on the Duquesne Incline; you'll be 'right down the street.' The view from the top of Mt. Washington is really nice, the 'museum' at the top is very interesting and there are not many places you can still ride on a cable car railway. See http://incline.pghfree.net/ for info. The parking lot at the bottom is free. I also agree to request a river view room if possible. I only had breakfast at the hotel so I don't know how the food the rest of the day is. There is usually a coffe stand near the gift shop that has muffins, etc. in the morning if you don't feel like 'sit-down.'

If you're hungry and feeling adventurous, you could go to Primanti Brothers and have one of their famous sandwiches - they put the fries right on it!

The Sheraton is probably the best option for your needs.

IMO, the best two hotels in Pittsburgh are the Renaissance and the Omni William Penn, but they aren't the hippest...

If only you had more time, though! The Fairmont Pittsburgh is opening in a few months in the new, mostly glass Three PNC Plaza. It may be the hippest Pittsburgh has had in a while....

I agree with Trekker. The Renaissance and the Omni William Penn are about the best in town. FYI, the rooms at the William Penn vary greatly with a category. You might want request one of their larger, renovated rooms.

Wow, just returned from 4 days in Pittsburgh, and were so pleasantly surprised! we went since there was a marathon for my husband to run, and a Brewers/Pirates game for us both. Our hotel was The Renaissance, just a few steps from the Roberto Clemente Bridge. We were on the 12th floor (as requested by their Virtual Concierge the day before we arrived), and the fireworks on the river aftyer the game were amazing! They had my DH's Fruit plate ready (birthday), and service was EXCELLENT the whole time! There were good bars across the street (good food & music, not necessarily hip?), and plenty of restaurants and theaters nearby. We enjoyed the Neighborhoods Trolley Tour/Incline ride. Our driver was a gem! The Carnegie Science Ctr was worth the walk (saw IMAX about Secrets of Greece), and the food & views in this neighborhood were amazing. We saw Moon For The Misbegotten, quality play in a quality theater. But most of all, we were pleasantly surprised by how FRIENDLY EVERYONE we encountered was: in 5 days, we saw one person inebriated & one person spit, and NO ONE cursing!! Even at the baseball game where their home team lost! Really, good job Sixburgh!

The only surprising part is about that report is about no cursing. Glad you had a good visit.
