First choice:
Newport, RI with beaches, mansions, shopping, dining, etc.
The following are one choice in each New England State:
Maine - Stay in Ogunquit for beaches, lobsters, shopping and cliff walk. Day trips to Portland, Maine and Portsmouth, NH
New Hampshire - White Mountains (Lincoln) for a more "active" vacation or the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods for laid back elegance.
Vermont - Woodstock/Quechee area.

If and when you get around to Nebraska be sure to visit the Henry Doorly Zoo located in Omaha.

The "Desert Dome" (the world's largest indoor desert) is opening Wed March 27th. It is a $15M project which includes 3 desert landscapes (the Sonoran Desert, the Namib Desert of Africa & the Red Center of Australia)
While at the zoo be sure to visit the Aquarium (with a glass enclosed tunnel) and the Lied Jungle (North America's largest indoor rainforest)
If you are just passing thru for the day you might want to eat lunch or dinner in the Old Market (a number of nice shops and restaurants)
Have a great trip wherever you decide to go....though Nebraska is a bit far from all the East Coast States you need to visit.
