Philadelphia to Eastport Maine - summer
Open to all suggestions - driving, flying, places to stay in Eastport or at the halfway point. Expect to travel a week if driving - 3 or 4 nights if we fly. Have two kids 8 & 10 when we travel over the summer. Eastport is required - visiting family. Thanks!

True.
If money were no object, you could fly to Portland and rent a car to drive north. If you do that, I would suggest spending the rest of the day and your first night in Portland, a very nice downtown/waterfront with good food and fun places for the kids to walk around.
It cuts the joourney by more than half.
Since you will be eager to get there, follow the inland route on Google Maps. But I would suggest taking the coast route (US 1) back to Portland unless you have had all the coast you want to see while in Eastport.

I went back and checked Bangor, and there are lots of direct flights from Phila, though most of them are on airlines I never heard of.
So if you could get a rental car there that you could return in Portland (or vice versa) you could have the best of both worlds.
