Philadelphia suggestions

Going to Philaddelphia this weekend for a wedding. Staying at the Sheraton Society Hill.

Any suggestions (food and sights) for each day. (I know it is a broad request).

Friday we will be in King of Prussia during the day, then going to dinner with the bride and groom that night. Saturday, free time until the afternoon. Probably want to stay close to the hotel. Sunday is our tourist day. Thanks.

Kids or no kids? I would probably do the historical stuff on Saturday morning. See the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, walk up to Old City and wander around. It's a nice walk from the Sheraton through the Society Hill area. Or maybe go over to Reading Terminal for breakfast first and then do the history.
On Sunday I would probably plan on Museums. The Art Museum is free if you get there in the morning. Walk down behind there and you can see Boathouse Row. The road along there is closed on Sundays and you can also rollerblade along the river if that's your thing.
There are many restaurants in Old City that have outside seating if you are around for lunch. A number of places along Market (although it's rather busy for my tastes). There are also some places along South St. which would be pretty convenient to the Sheraton. (Azafran (BYOB), Knave of Hearts) Interesting people watching that's for sure. Have fun!

All of P@P's suggestions are excellent, but there is one thing you left out. You've GOT to have an authentic Philly cheese steak!

I agree with all previous posters. But also, if you have any energy left, try to visit the Rittenhouse Square area (about 30-40 minutes walk from your hotel) - very classy, and the University City (another 15 minutes).
I hope you'll like my city.

Just an update, the Phila. Inquirer had an article today saying that as of Wednesday the Art Museum will no longer have a free Sunday morning policy, instead it will be "whatever you wish to give" all day on Sunday.

Lindsey: Ask for a room with an exterior view. We found the atrium view rooms to be dark and kind of dreary.

Thanks for the responses so far. We are kidless, so have a greater amount of flexibility. Any suggestions for Saturday night activities after the wedding?

Thank you for all the responses. We had a great time in Philadelphia. All the suggestions were very helpful and on target. I was pelasantly surprised with my trip. The city is beautiful and the people are very courteous and friendly. Much different than I imagined based on the news coverage.

One thing though. What's the big deal about Philly cheesesteaks. Went to Geno's, Pat's and Ron's (recently selected by Philadelphia Magazine as the best in the city). At all three, the sandwiches were bland, the meat tasteless, and the bread gummy. I just don't get it.

I would recommend going to Jim's Steak on south street which is about 5-10 minutes walk from your walk.

Nothing really special about Philly cheesesteak, I guess no place makes that of "steak". I don't think it is particularly tasty, unless large amount of cheesesteak sauce is poured on it.

However, I still like it. I was once in toronton for 3 weeks and was looking for it crazily!

Lindsey: Did you stay at the Sheraton Society Hill? If so I was wondering about your evaluation of the hotel. We stayed there 2 years ago and didn't care for the hotel. The lobby and restaurant were in need of refurbishing, very 80's, hopefully they have renovated since then. The room was okay but dark (atrium view). Also our opinion was colored by the fact we were awoken by a fire alarm at 3AM and had to vacate the hotel for an hour.

Glad you enjoyed Philadelphia, we always have a good time there and generally like staying in the Rittenhouse Square area.

Yes, we stayed at the Sheraton Society Hill. Our room was nice. On the 4th floor, overlooking the pool.

There probably has been some refurbishing, but it still needs some work. Little maintenance things that just aren't being taken care of. Like you, we had the fire alarm in the middle of the night problem also. The club suite is marginal at best. Oh, and no bartender for the atrium bar.

My wife has stayed at both the Sheraton Society Hill and the Sheraton Rittenhouse Square, and prefers the latter for amenities and service.
