The ride to Market East station is about a half hour and it runs relatively frequently, although they are working on the regional rail lines on the weekends and there may be differences at that time. (See www.septa.com)
However, if you possibly can, do try staying in another section of town; the airport area doesn't have much going on! It's very easy to get to the airport, as you see, via train or one of the limo/van services.
Have a great time!

Depends on how "near" you're staying to the airport.
The R1 runs 2x/hour and takes about 25 minutes to get to downtown, so that is do-able.
How are you getting to the airport station from the hotel?
The R1 makes a stop at Eastwick station (right outside the airport). The Eastwick station is within walking distance to maybe 2 or 3 motels, though I wouldn't really recommend that at night.
You have a much better time if you stay in Center City. If hotel cost is an issue, you can try Priceline. I got a 3* hotel for $45/night - the Hilton Garden Inn. (check biddingfortravel.com first)

The answers are perfect. The trip from PHL to downtown is easy but you have to connect back and forth between your hotel & the airport train stop. Not exactly God's Country. The regional rains are underrated -can you pick one in a better area?
