You actually can rent dogs - read an article in NYTimes a few months ago about how some people in NYC and a few other large cities think it is a cool thing to do. When I find reference I will post it. In the mean time, you may rent either one of my cats for cheap and I may throw my husband in on the deal.

Upon request a luxury hotel in NY will bring up a goldfish for the duration of your stay.

Not sure if this is still true. If you were homesick for your pooch, you could hire a hound to accompany you on your road to Hana adventure.

While I have enjoyed this thread as much as anyone, I think that 321go is the only dear Fodorite who has actually answered the OP's query.

Meanwhile, maribeth, do not take offense at the fun that people have been having w/your heading. It is good-natured. I have to admit that ipod robbie wrote exactly what I was thinking when I saw the heading....

How about two German Shepards in the Tampa area - I can probably get my friend to pay YOU to take them for a few days.

Poor OP! Didn't you realize what you were "petting" yourself in fur, didja ya now!!

Anyway, try VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owner); listings indicate which are pet friendly and they have a lot for Florida. We stayed in Seagrove a few years ago, with our dog, and had a great time.

I had my usual pet goldfish at the Hotel Monaco in SF last week. No "rental" fee - complimentary while you stay there. I named this one "Cybill" in honor of Cybill Shepherd and her play, the Curvy Widow.

Why would you want to rent a pet?

I know people who have leased horses, because buyihg one was too expensive.

I cannot think of a reason to rent a pet- do elaborate!

Companionship while on vacation.

I think it's a big deal in Japan.
