Passports required for children?
We are taking the Kids on our first"family" vacation later this year to Mexico. Are passports required or can we use birth certificates for the kids? They will be 5 and 2.5 years old.

Hi doc, if US citizens, an original or certified copies of their birth certificates are ok, (not the hospital copy with the foot prints)with both natural parent's permission to travel in case one parent is absent...passports certainly accepted, but not required...have fun !

Read the info on the following webpage, esp. if one of the parents is not travelling with the children.

From the US State Department’s website at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_p.../cis_970.html:
“The Government of Mexico requires that all U.S. citizens present proof of citizenship and photo identification for entry into Mexico. While U.S. citizenship documents such as a certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate. . . . are acceptable, the U.S. Embassy recommends traveling with a valid U.S. passport to avoid delays or misunderstandings. U.S. citizens have encountered difficulty boarding onward flights in Mexico without a passport. U.S. citizens boarding flights to Mexico should be prepared to present one of these documents as proof of U.S. citizenship, along with photo identification. Driver’s permits, voter registration cards, affidavits and similar documents are not sufficient to prove citizenship for readmission into the United States.”
While initially it may be a hassle to obtain a passport (you have to go in person with the children), the passport can be issued in 6 weeks or less, is good for 10 years and is renewable. It is also great identification for domestic travel, no need to present other ID. Get a passport for them, they will thank you in later years.
