Passport for child- should I wait till she's 14?
I know my friends on here will be sympathetic. My daughter turns 14 on Jan 13. We will be traveling to France on June 1. I could get a passport now, but would have to have her father (my EX) go along and show proof and all that. I'd rather be bitten in the butt by a wild donkey. Plus, he will probably be difficult about it. Do you think I'll be safe applying in the middle of January?

One of my co workers just had this happen. His daughter asked him to have a letter notorized, stating tat he was aware of her getting her passport. She just turned 14. It is much easier for the child to ask then the ex parent (I found anyway) Where they will give you a hard time they will be sweet as can be to their daughters.

14 alone may not solve your problem. The child MAY be able to get a passport then without parents being present - but not if there are custody issues.
But depending on your court-approved child custody arrangements it may well be illegal to take the child out of state - never mind out of the country - without notifying/getting the approval of the other parent.
I would consult your attorney to make sure this isn;t a problem before you go on the vacation.

Whoa....I hadn't thought about that. Tecnically, I've taken them out of the country twice (cruises) without any concerns. We have joint custody. My oldest will be 18 when we go. I think I'll have him write the notarized letter...good idea. I'll make sure he signs a letter about the France part. She would kill him if he gave her any grief....LOL!

Linda, I have no advice for you, but I'm roaring about the "bitten in the butt by a wild donkey" comment.
One of the happiest days of my life was the day my DD turned 18 and I no longer had to speak to her father ever again if I didn't want to. I feel your pain.

trvlmaven--Thanks for the heads up on the process being sped up! My passport is nearing renewal, and the kids need new ones, and I have been dreading this. I might wait til later in the fall now.

Well....a while back I inquired if anyone had ever hiked with a donkey. Fellow Fodorite Enzian told a story about picking up a wild donkey which bit her ex in the butt.

There were plenty of people searching for the donkey after that, lolol! My ex is not the most pleasant person and does not cooperate in any way. My perfect husband and I are renting a boat and are cruising the Burgundy canal followed by a few days in Paris. This is a graduation present for the girls.

I found a lot of "permission to travel" forms downloadable if you're too lazy (me) to do them yourself. DD called her daddy and told him she needed to get these signed TODAY! LOL! Thanks for all your insight and advice. Neopatrick are you back home yet?

I got passports for my stepchildren in Feb of this year. My stepdaughter is 12 and my stepson is 16. They did not ask for any paperwork on my stepson. Dh and I had the forms for both of them just in case. They did not say "boo".
I took my son when he was 15 to Cabo San Lucas and was never asked one word by anyone.. I thought it was so odd. We have different last names even.
