Parking outside NYC

I am driving to NY via I-80(stroudsburg area). Would like to park my car somewhere close to Manhattan and take the train in. Staying on w. 49th street. Can anyone give me SPECIFICS as far as where to park, how much it will cost, parking and train. Want the quickest route into Manhattan. Thank you. The other threads arent answering my questions.

I'm answering this only because no one else has since I certainly cannot give you specifics. I don't know that area at all. But I often drive to NYC from New England and park my car at a train station (usually White Plains or somewhere around there). If I drive down I-95 as you approach the city every exit has a sign for the train station. I would guess it might be the same in Jersey. Some of the smaller stops will only have small parking lots that you would have difficulty finding a space in. (For example, I stay with people in New Jersey and the lot by their train station is very small). That's why I use White Plains as it has several garages/lots near the train station. Good luck.

I assume you mean Stroudsburg Pa. I can't help you, but clarifying your route and how long you need to park might help others help you.

What you are proposing sounds overly complicated. If you must drive, and don't want to take a bus from Stroudsburg to NYC (I recall a Martz trailways bus service from PA to NYC), I would just drive 80 to either 46/ or 280 to get to route 3(follow signs to Lincoln Tunnel). Once you come out of the Lincoln Tunnel in NYC, follow signs to Port Authority Bus terminal on 42nd ST and 8th Avenue, there are "Park and Lock" Garages that are right there and not hard to find where you can leave your car and catch a cab or walk to 49th ST. Here is a link to Parking Garages in NYC:http://www.parking.com/nywww/atr_Midtown_west.html

Here is a specific garage with contact info:http://www.parking.com/nywww/2175.html

Appears you can help yourself with this NJ transit rail scheduler link, in case you still want to attempt the car/train NJ transfer:http://www.njtransit.com/sf_tr_schedules.shtml#

The reason I want to park in NJ is to avoid sitting in traffic at the Lincoln tunnel and the city. I thought it would be less stressful and save time. I could be wrong.

Depending on when you would hit the tunnel, traffic could be non-existent. Obviously avoid rush hours, roughly between 7:30 - 9:30 am and 4 pm - 7 pm on weekdays. IMO if you hit the tunnel around 11 am you will drive right in, and will avoid rush hour on Interstate 80 as well. Parking at the Port Authority as mentioned above is great idea, as you will avoid having to drive in Manhattan which has lots of one-way streets as well as traffic at most hours.

The problem with parking in NJ and taking a train or bus into Manhattan is that in many towns the parking is either for only a few hours (i.e. not overnight) or is by permit for residents only. From Stroudsburg, I assume you will be taking Interstate 80. You could try a large town like Morristown off of Route 80. A train from Morristown to Penn Station will take about an hour, some require a change in Newark (Broad Street Station). The phone number for parking info for Morristown is 973-539-4810.

Another idea would be to drive to the Hoboken/Jersey City area and take a ferry over to West 38th Street in Manhattan, and then either a connecting shuttle bus or taxi to the hotel. Take a look at www.nywaterway.com or call 1-800-53-FERRY. You can leave the car overnight at the Colgate Pier in Jersey City (double check on this, I have not done it in several years) and possibly at their other piers, check with NY Waterway.

Website for Amtrak is Amtrak.com, website for NJ Transit is njtransit.com. Look for information on station and parking on those sites.

We've done this on our last two trips to NYC, and it's worked very well. We did the NJ Transit commuter rail from the Metropark station on one trip, and the PATH subway train from Jersey City the next. The PATH trains run every few minutes and are cheap. The NJ Transit trains run every 30 - 60 minutes depending on the day, time, and location. It was about $10.50 roundtrip (non-peak) from Metropark to Penn Station in NYC. Check www.njtransit.com for schedules, fares, and maps of the stations with parking info. Parking at Metropark was $5.00/day on weekdays and $2.00/day on weekends. Parking at the Newport Center Mall in Jersey City near the Padonia/Newport Path station was about $15/day.
