Park City in December with toddler
I know I must be insane to consider flying with my daughter again however....
My husband would like to go skiing in Park City and my daughter and I will be along for the ride.
Are there things to do with her? She will be 14 months old and barely walking.
I also would love recommendations on where to stay. I would like to be close to Main Street but I don't want to spend alot and it must be really clean (just had horrid experience in Fl).

Hi Lenox,
What you pay in Dec will depend entirely if you are coming during the Christmas holidays or before! Before is much less, Christmas week is to the max.
What type of accomodation do you want? Hotel, condo, private home?
With a tiny tot there isn't that much to do. You can play in the snow....Maybe some moms can answer that better. There are babysitting services available if you want to go off to the spa for a while.

Playing in the snow is fun for a short time but I don't think I want to do it all day everyday.
I don't think there's much of anything else to do with a toddler. We were in Park City the very same week a couple of years ago (with nearly-grown children). I don't ski, so while everyone else was skiing, I was hanging out eating, reading, strolling, shopping. Not much that would be appealing to a toddler.

Lenox,
The only other thing I can think of would be the possibility of taking your little one to the ski area day care for kids too little to ski. At least there he/she could play with other little ones and have some surroundings alternative to the condo.
Maybe this is a good time to leave the baby with grandma and grandpa? Maybe have a nice trip for just the two of you, even if you don't ski.
(You should learn!)

Lenox..my Brother-in-Law owns a condo in PArk City..it is a popular location with a little condo village around it with nice walking area, shops restaurants...not the main town area more slope side...and has an Ice Rink right out front and ski lift also right at the condo location. Major Bus Stop can take you to main town area or to shop at an Outlet MAll nearby..can catch a ride to Deer VAlley...
I'll see if I can get my BIL to send me the name of the Condos..

Lenox -- have you traveled with your 14 mo old before? Not trying to be snarky here, but if you have, you know that there isn't much that a 14 mo old can do other than play. There are some outlet malls near Park City if you have a car. There is a movie theatre in Park City (again, you'd need a car). The town has lots of restaurants, cute shops and even a day spa, but nothing really geared toward such a young child. I agree that you should check out the babysitting options at DV and PCMR -- if for no other reason it will allow your child to play around other kids and with toys that you didn't bring from home.
These trips are tough to do until your kids are old enough to do some things with you.

I'd really recommend a condo over a hotel. With a toddler, it's not that much fun to eat every meal in a restaurant, so it's nice to have a kitchen for some meals and snacks.
It's also nice to have a bedroom to put the little one to sleep, and still have a space for the adults to hang out, either during nap time or the evening, between child bedtime and adult bedtime.

Thank you for all the responses.
I am not really interested in traveling with my dd however I have no interest in going to Park City without her. I don't want to shop with her to much because we both find that boring. I love to eat but my clothes are tight enough.
I was hoping that there would be all these holiday festivals and petting zoos we could go to. She is a very busy girl and needs lots to do.
Maybe dh will have to go with a friend this year.

Hi again Lenox,
So you are going during Christmas? The only thing I can think of that your little one would enjoy would be seeing all the holiday lights at Temple Square - but that's in SLC. Outdoors, cold, snow - I'd give it about 30 minutes with a small tot.
Petting zoos? Are you serious? I'm sorry, but it really sounds like you have never been to a ski area before. No petting zoos.

Dayle,
The reason I ask about a petting zoo is because they have one in Aspen. It is a small area but they have reindeer and several other neat animals.
I have been to several ski areas in my life but this is the first time with a child. I am trying to be prepared.
Thanks for your other suggestions however.

Lenox -- there will be little or nothing for you to do there for a 14 mo old. I have a 3 and 4 yr old, so I know how these trips go. Other than playing in the snow, walking around town or shopping, you will be stuck in the condo watching whatever kiddie DVDs you brought and playing with whatever toys you managed to get into your suitcase. I'd skip it if that's an option.

On the positive side---I live in Salt Lake and have a 5 yr old and a 2 yr old. Here's what you can do: rent a car. Drive down to Salt Lake every morning--takes 30 minutes MAX. Go to the Childrens Museum--it is world class. Try the Natural History Museum at the University. The zoo is good to go to--I just bundle up my kids as long as it is above 25 degrees. (SLC is 10 degrees warmer than Park City) There is also the Red Butte aboreteum that has a childrens garden. It really just depends. If it is only 30 degrees and sunny in December, then you can do lots of things. Lots of people in Park City do have toddlers--look for the Chamber of Commerce site and see what kids events are planned--story time at the library etc. You will just want to have a car. There are plenty of condos in Park City. The shuttle bus does run out to the outlets (not a good choice with kids--but they do have a great Stride Rite outlet there plus Hartstrings and all the other kids type outlets--they also have a pet adoption center there that is at least open on the weekends--I have killed an hour in there before)

I live in Park City and raised my two sons here, so I'm trying to remember what we did for fun when they were little.
- There is a perfect sledding hill for little ones by the City Library. It's where my boys went to preschool, and they sledded there every day at recess. You can buy a cheap sled at Wal-Mart, and it's all they need.
- Build a snowman.
- Ride the Main Street Trolley.
- Get hot chocolate on Main Street.
- Have a snowball fight.
- Build a snow fort.
- Go ice skating at the rink at Park City Mountain Resort. There is also a new indoor ice skating facility.

Where are you from? Are you used to driving in the snow and mountains??
Not sure how much of this would happen driving from Park City to Salt Lake City but think about the possibilities of bad weather in a car alone with a baby in unfamiliar territory.
