Stayed there years ago. Charming, sweet Deco-era property, across the street from the beach. Smallish rooms, not plush, but clean, comfortable and picturesque. It's truly like stepping back in time to the late 1930s.
Lots of things to see-- the beach, the Deco architecture of the district, the parade of wild and beautiful people on Ocean Drive (especially at night), Lincoln Road Mall (pedestrian street, funky shops, restaurants, clubs, etc.), Vizcaya, etc., etc., etc. I'm sure otehrs will post their "must-see" lists.

The hotel's not far from anything I mentioned-- Vizcaya would be a drive, but not a horrible one (the city isn't incredibly spread out). The rest are walks (some longer than others, but that's what cabs are for). You're going to be basically just south of the worst of Ocean Drive (i.e., the mad crush of people strolling up and down at night), so it shouldn't be too loud at night. I usually stay north of where you are (at the Cardozo), in another "quiet" stretch of Ocean.

TravisMcGee: Exactly right. They have posters for that flick in the hallways of the Cardozo.
JmVikmanis: That's right. The Carlyle was the site for "The Birdcage". It has spent the last several years empty-- renovations began in summer 2001, but seemed to be stopped last year. The city won't let them demolish the property, but who knows if they'll finish restoration anytime soon?
