Oxford, Mississippi

The wife and I are wanting a qick getaway this weekend and somehow I am "drawn" to Oxford, MS. Has anyone been there and what is it like?.....Also does anyone have any other suggestion for a getaway that we'll leave Friday morning and get back Sunday pm.. We are located just north of Nashville in KY.

Oxford is very small and wouldn't be my idea of a vacation destination. If you decide to go you should probably check the Ole Miss football schedule. On a football weekend it would be difficult to get reservations.

Go to a bookstore that has a great magazine selection and pick up a copy of The Oxford Literary Journal (?). It has a lot of ads for restaurants etc. I've wanted to visit Oxford just from reading that mag.

The magazine the previous poster referred to is the Oxford American, published in Oxford by John Grisham . . . and an excellent magazine in addition to its Oxford roots.

Have you considered spending the weekend in Memphis, maybe at the Peabody, and driving over to Oxford (two hours or less) for one of your days? Memphis is much fun, especially if you stay downtown; lots of interesting restaurant possibilities, notably the Rendezvous, the Peabody's restaurants, all the places on Beale Street, B.B. King's blues club . . . That said, Oxford is a lovely, interesting town with fascinating literary history. And if you get bored, the casinos at Tupelo are only an hour (or less) from Memphis.

There are no casinos at Tupelo. I think you mean Tunica.

Mary -- thanks so much for the correction! I can't believe I did that, especially since I lived in Mississippi when all the casinos were being built!
